A pathologized fairytale women’s support group is meeting at a therapist’s office. Sleeping Beauty has her narcolepsy, Alice in Wonderland has a drug addiction, Rapunzel is absent again, Goldilocks has obsessive compulsive disorder, Cinderella keeps checking the time, Dorothy isn’t in Kansas anymore, Little Red Riding Hood is afraid of animals and needs to stop talking to strangers, and so on. But one woman is feeling left out, that’s Clara, a divorcee from New Jersey. The sisters reach out to her. Hasn’t she ever been disappointed by a prince, harried with dwarves, or been plagued by a witch? Considering her ex-husband, children, and mother-in-law, she realizes yes. United in suffering, the women bond as equal warriors, survivors, and legends in their time.
Well-staged with recognizable costumes and veteran actresses, this short isn’t particularly original nor long enough, but the good message is conveyed for personalizing mythology and identifying with archetypes to build self-respect. The snappy dialogue comes from the female director’s experiences in a women’s poker group. The gathering of strong women characters is also striking enough to drive home the point that cinema remains primarily chauvinist with secondary female roles. Dir./writer Terri Edda Miller, stars Amy Pietz (Clara), Laura Kightlinger (Cinderella), Sarah Wynter (Sleeping Beauty).
