"24.8. Satyajit Rayn elokuva alkaa todella hyvin kuvaten ylemmän kastin lääkäriä ylimielisenä ja alempiarvoisiin tyhmiin nenänvartta pitkin katsovana. Tästä huolimatta hän ajattelee itsensä hyväntekijänä - normaalia humanistivasemmistolaisuutta siis... Kaikki muuttuu Japanin käymän sodan seurauksena. Nälänhätä iskee eikä riisiin olekaan enää varaa. Ihmiset tekevät kaikkein karmivimpiakin mahdollisia tekoja saadakseen mahansa täyteen ja joskus sekin on liian myöhäistä"
