Chrono Trigger - Super famicom and SNES
Considered to be one of the best JRPGs of all time (Next to final fantasy of course) this extremely unique game has become the very quintessence of Japanese Role Play game.
While it's true that people have moved on to games like Skyrim now, it will always be remembered as the game central to it all. With a great story, graphics (for the time), open world, and battle system there really isn't a reason to truly honor this game.

DOOM - PC Games
DOOM. The FPS equivalent of Zeus. This was one of the most innovative games of the time. It was so much more different than the side scroller shooters that came before it.
It's concept was simple: Kill the demons, get the keys, beat the level. This process was so cool at the time and even now it still is some good old fun.
Let's not forget the deathmatches either. While the internet was very basic at the time, it didn't stop people from having rocket launcher fights for hours at a time.
Any FPS fan should know and love this game even if Doom 3 wasn't quite as memorable.

Final Fantasy VII - PlayStation
Most people know this game. Some like it, some don't, but all gamers have heard of this game at least once or twice.
Well this was a big turning point in the series. Not only was it in full 3D, it also created a fast paced battle system with lots of cool abilities to choose from.
Some will argue that it's not the best Final Fantasy game and they wouldn't be wrong for saying so, but this is the one that put the game on the map.

StarCraft - PC Games
The first Blizzard game that caught the attention of the Korean gaming audience, this classic was known for it's endless Real Time Strategy gameplay. Seriously. People played this game from 1998 all the way up to this very day.
Not only was the game itself endless with the online play, but it allowed for custom maps and teams to be made so you could keep furthering your game experience.
It's kind of like the RTS equivalence of DnD.

Super Mario 64 - Nintendo 64
Well it was a tie between this and Super Mario world, but honestly this is the one I think more people were impressed by. I mean it showed what the N64 could do. Not only that but it was fun for being the first 3D mario game.

Gran Turismo - PlayStation
Well okay, maybe everyone doesn't remember this one. However if you were a 90's kid and loved racing games, well here was your bread and butter.
Remember those steering wheels you bought for the PSX? Bonus points if you can post a picture of your original PSX wheel and peddles.

Super Smash Bros. - Nintendo 64
Well here it is. The best selling console fighter of the 90's. This game will later go on to included Solid Snake, Sonic, and let's not forget Zero Suit Samus.
This didn't have nearly as many characters, but hey it was still fun battling your friends on Friday night while everyone else was out doing things that weren't completely nerdy.
And I picked a video with cometary since that's what it most likely sounded like in your house.

GoldenEye 007 - Nintendo 64
Call of Duty 1!...
Don't worry I'm just kidding. Really though this was a fun FPS. Sure you can say DOOM was more of the creator of the genre, but this was the BIG talk of the 1990's.
Anyway I say this game speaks for itself.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Sega Genesis and Mega Drive
Sonic, Sonic, Sonic. Good old sonic.
Here is his first game. You should be glad he was such a big deal, because we would of had Alex Kid as Sega's icon. Instead we got a little blue hedgehog that's the "Fastest thing alive."
From a popularity and sales stand point, this game was a major success. Sure we still like Mario more, but this was Sega's proudest accomplishment. We got games, we got TV shows, we got merchandise. This was so huge that it rivaled Capcom's and Marvel's products for a short time.
But not to digress, this game it self was pretty cool. It was a platformer that favored speed over just jumping on enemies. Every level felt like a race so that you could get to the end of the zone to fight Doctor Robotnik. He came back every time with more challenging machines and you had to destroy them. Although Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) was probably one of the easier Sonic games.

Pokémon: Red Version - Game Boy
Number 1 is none other than Pokemon. Yes we all remember Pokemon. It's a big craze that has people to this day hooked on it's products. It's like a snowball rolling down an endless hill, it keeps getting bigger and bigger.
Adults, kids, girls, this game brings in everyone. I bet 99% of gamers played this game at least once and probably got really excited for beating the elite four their first time.
This game is so alluring. I don't know why, but when I saw gotta catch em' all I felt inclined to play it. Some even claim that it brain washes people. While that's a little farfetch'd (ha pokemon pun), I believe that this game is made to be very appealing to young kids.
Well at least it's a safe habit to have unlike smoking or drugs.
