Audition (1999)
A visceral and harrowing piece that eviscerates the social norms between men and women. Audition displays a deft balance between subtle thematics and unnerving, unflinching grisliness.
Movie Maniac's rating:
An exploitative Italian cash in on the cannibal craze that inadvertently broke boundaries by being a premiere example of found footage horror, extreme cinema, and unprecedented realism with its "film within a film" structure. Both an intentional takedown of the media and an open criticism of the violation of nature and culture by the supposedly civilized world, the movie ironically mirrors the behind the scenes extremes the crew was pushed to to make it. As fascinating to watch as it is to read about.
