Visually stunning sceneries but the pacing is just too slow and the storyline/characters are overly sentimental (though it's okay because it's John Keats' story).

Adam (2009)
April 2nd, DVD
A lot like (500) Days of Summer but starring an aspie character. Witty and true... Hugh Dancy is touching, cute and hot all at once. The movie could have been better if the scriptwriter would have dropped off Beth's parents. Her dad's trial did not really have its place in the movie.

Crows Zero (2007)
April 6th, DVD
Even though I'm not a fan of the genre, Crows Zero was an enjoyable watch (I guess it helps having Shun Oguri as the lead actor). Takashi Miike knows how to handle the camera, the storyline stays simple and believable while the pace never falter. The variety of characters adds to the entertainment, except maybe for Meisa Kuroki's character whose R&B seems out of place in the movie.

Goddamn awful! Terrible acting from the entire cast who show zero emotion the entire movie, and it doesn't help that their characters spend half of the time talking in metaphors. Pathetic music, amateurish laughable direction/editing, time frame is incomprehensible...

Not daring enough. The scenes are too rushed which doesn't let much time for the emotions to settle, and the story becomes unbelievable and dull. Tobey Maguire's acting is great but it's not enough to save the movie.

An interestingly well-edited documentary film. Great footages and interviews of ex-members and others. It gives a detailed background story of the band and add more depth to Ian Curtis' personality, more than in Anton Corbijn's Control (IMO). Though Curtis' widow, Deborah, is missing here, we still appreciate the use of quotes from her biography.

A prequel for fans? Hum, not so sure. We don't learn anything more than in the two previous movies and even if the makers want to show the "other side of the story", RotL doesn't impress. Yeah, we feel for Lucian but the Lycans stay unattractive (personally I couldn't give a rat's ass about the Lycans). Viktor becomes such a caricature it's boring. The storyline doesn't elevate much, the direction fails to deliver during the fight scenes and the CGI aren't that great. Although it's not a horrible watch if you have time to spend.

The direction is riveting and it clearly does a great job to set the mood (with help of the music). The script is complex staging numerous characters, but the story unravels as one goes along. The tension is palpable even though we understand what's going to happen.

He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
May 17th, DVD
A number of cliché romance comedies storylines all wrapped up in one movie. There are not much characters to care about. Jennifer Aniston's seems to be the most genuine at the beginning until she comes back running in the arms of her douche-bag of a boyfriend. Jennifer Connelly's character albeit being a psycho gets a point for leaving her cheating husband.
Demeaning to women, (practically) homophobic, questionably racist... At least, He's Just Not That Into You reminded me why I'm just not into rom coms.

Wong Kar Wai's techniques and shots are there but the story has no real substance. The dialogs seem off. The music bores. The mismatch of colorings sickens. The two leads, Norah Jones (Elizabeth) and Jude Law (Jeremy), are incredibly dull. The supporting actors, Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn and Natalie Portman, makes the journey a little more interesting thanks to their performances, though the screenwriters fail to show how and why their stories relate to or help Elizabeth's.
I would have expected more of Wong Kar Wai. Sorry.

The first part with Brigitte Lin and Takeshi Kaneshiro is so-so but the second part is another wonder from Wong Kar Wai. It's lighthearted and funny, Faye Wong is all cute and lovable and Tony Leung is hilarious and again always perfect in his role. The visuals don't disappoint either.

"Wong pulls out all the stops: grainy B&W alternates with richly saturated color [...] The closely observed nuances of Lai (Tony Leung) and Ho (Leslie Cheung)'s crumbling relationship are often overwhelmed by funky style, but somewhere under all the razzle-dazzle a melancholy tale of loneliness and love's labors lost quietly unfolds. The film is full of perfect moments [...] but to truly see them you have to close your eyes to the constant visual noise." - TV Guide

"How sorry can you feel for rich, unadventurous Americans in a major funk?
Both of them [Charlotte and Bob] have trouble understanding those trying to communicate with them. How many times must the film make fun of well-meaning Japanese mispronouncing English words? Once might be funny, but the repetitiveness reeks of cultural insensitivity, American arrogance and a dose of mean-spiritedness." - Palo Alto

Remember Me (2010)
June 5th, DVD
I was afraid the movie was going to be some random chick flick with sappy drama, but it ended up being nothing like that at all.
The movie actually deals mainly with family drama, loss and grief, more so than with romance. The story is intense and touching without being melodramatic. We care and feel for those wounded, well-developed characters and surely any young adult can relate to Tyler and his search for answers about the significance of life.
Robert Pattinson's acting isn't perfect, but he has moments of brilliance, especially during his scenes with Pierce Brosnan.
Allen Coulter's direction is quite good and it fits the story (never over the top). And the score by Marcelo Zarvos is such a gem.

The Runaways (2010)
June 13th, DVD
""The Runaways," an entertaining but routine rock flick, chronicles the corruption, rise and fall of Cherie Currie (Fanning), though she didn't rise very high (number of US hits the band recorded: zero) and didn't fall particularly hard. [...]
There should have been more of that wit in the movie, which begins with a charming shot of menstrual blood splatting on a sidewalk. The film then strenuously assures us that it's liberating for girl rockers to urinate on rivals' guitars, have sex with each other, annoy their families, growl and generally get strung out. Currie eventually wobbles through a Cobain-level haze of addiction, alienation and ennui. Yay, girls!" - New York Post
"The Runaways ultimately feels too lethargic and conventional for the wild story it tells." - The Miami Herald
"After all this, we can't help but ask, why Cherie, anyway? [...] Shine on, Joan." - Bright Lights

Inglourious Basterds (2009)
July 2nd, DVD
Why Tarantino even bothered with the Basterds when he had a greater plot with Colonel Landa (Christoph Waltz) and Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent)? Who knows. The whole idea isn't bad, but it becomes absurd when history gets rewritten, though some will say it's okay because it's a Tarantino movie. There are some strong scenes, mostly the longer ones with characters discussing at a table but it can be tedious, as the dialogue isn't always without flaws. Ultimately, I think the Inglourious Basterds are just here for the gore fest. Most people like, I don't. It gets pretty ridiculous actually. Are they even necessary? In the end, Shosanna and her friend still manage to set the theater on fire... What Tarantino at least succeeded with this movie is reveal Christoph Waltz as a star. He's utterly brilliant in his role of Colonel Landa who's a twisted, perverted Nazi. It's a delight to see him speaks four different languages, expose people and whatever they say in the end, he was smarter than everybody else.
