Casshern (2004)

Japanese scifi movie. In a dystopian alternate timeline Europe has been occupied by the Greater Eastern Federation (Japan) & a 50 year long war rages. Visually it's an amazing spectacle, a work of art that's surreal in parts with fantastic special effects. I'd love to see it on a big cinema screen. It's a live action remake of an anime movie & the effects recognize this with a great mix between live action & CGI. It has a highly stylized retro-futuristric feel that is a definite nod towards Metropolis. There's also a nod towards Frankenstein, Terminator & The Matrix. The storyline however is quite hard to follow, due in part to the visual assualt on your senses & because the film is long, 2.5 hrs, and despite the spectacle the plot fights to hold your attention. That was the most drawn out, pretentious, over done piece of crap I have seen. Ok maybe one of... It was enough to put me to sleep and in fact almost did. Think I would have had more enjoyment watching grass grow. I'm a bit pissed off, can you tell? I just wasted over two hours of my existence trying to stay awake. Sure I loved the imagery, some of it was fantastic but after watching it for awhile that's pretty much all it was. An excuse to have a string of great imagery put together along with melodrama and dialogue that amounted to drivel. Drawn out drivel! In the beginning it was a tad confusing and pretty slow but when the Neo Sapiens proclaimed themselves I thought maybe it was going to turn around. Boy was I disappointed. I was going to give this movie a mere 4 out of 5 rating until the last ten minutes of the film.. it was so beautful a conclusion that it made me cry LOL the tales is one of hate - and greed. And all that is wrong in our world.. the cinematoraphy was amazing - obvilously a lot of work put into this movie after it was filmed - filters and brushwork - bloody amazing.. you can tell it was originally based on the anime :) the whole movie just blew me away.. music is terrific too.. i recommend it to everyone!!

That is the question I would ask. What on earth was I watching? There are no doubt going to be some spoilers in this review, so read at your peril! This film is almost entirely comprised of CGI based action. I must say it is extremely confusing and unexpectedly boring throughout long parts. The earth has effectively been torn apart and humanity is too exhausted to rebuild their society, but who exactly is the army still fighting? There's lots of mention of terrorists but I didn't see any. The neoroids wander out into the middle of nowhere and stumble across a fortress which just happens to have millions of ready-built robots with which they can wage war on humanity... ok?
