Movies and TV-shows I have seen with my girlfriend

Notes: My girlfriend comes from an African country with some very strong anti-gay policies and general hostile feeling towards gay people so I was rather cautious with this movie. Well, I was really pleased that she agreed to give it a try and I was eventually seriously impressed by how much it did touch her which I didn't really expect. As far as I was concerned, I usually don’t care much for most Dutch movies and even less for their usually really lame romantic-comedies but I have to admit that I really like this one though.

Dutch translation: Mijn vriendin komt uit een Afrikaans land met een zeer sterk anti-homobeleid en een algemene vijandige houding tegenover homo's, dus ik was nogal voorzichtig met deze film. Nou, ik was echt blij dat ze het wilde proberen en ik was uiteindelijk erg onder de indruk van hoezeer het haar raakte, wat ik niet echt had verwacht. Wat mij betreft, geef ik meestal niet zoveel om de meeste Nederlandse films en nog minder om hun meestal echt saaie romantische komedies, maar ik moet toegeven dat ik deze echt leuk vond.

Notes: I already saw this movie once but I was quite eager to check it out with my girlfriend since she is coming from Africa. Indeed, I think the damned thing was incredibly inspiring and also terribly heartbreaking. To be honest, even though my girlfriend liked it and thought it was interesting, she really had a hard time to handle the violent scenes so I guess I should avoid this kind of material in the future.

Dutch translation: Ik heb deze film al een keer gezien, maar ik wilde hem graag samen met mijn vriendin bekijken omdat ze uit Afrika komt. Inderdaad, ik vond het ongelooflijk inspirerend en ook verschrikkelijk hartverscheurend. Om eerlijk te zijn, ook al vond mijn vriendin hem leuk en interessant, had ze echt moeite met de gewelddadige scènes, dus ik denk dat ik dit soort films in de toekomst beter kan vermijden.

Notes: Since this Dutch TV-series had a solid reputation, I thought we might as well check it out. Unfortunately, after a few mins, my girlfriend asked to watch something else. I guess the content was just too dark and violent for her.

Dutch translation: Omdat deze Nederlandse tv-serie een goede reputatie had, dacht ik dat we dat konden samen kijken. Helaas vroeg mijn vriendin na een paar minuten of we iets anders konden kijken. Ik denk dat de inhoud gewoon te donker en gewelddadig voor haar was.

Notes: From the moment I heard about this TV-series, I became intrigued but I was afraid that the topic (the first-ever phone sex line in the Netherlands) would be too racy for my girlfriend. To my surprise, she actually liked it and we watched the whole thing together. Above all, she really enjoyed the historical depiction of Amsterdam, where she actually lives, and indeed, it was definitely a strong aspect. Personally, I also really enjoyed Joy Delima who was so charismatic and convincing. Unfortunately, it was narratively too clunky to become really amazing but, for a Dutch series, it was definitely a decent attempt though.

Dutch translation: Vanaf het moment dat ik over deze tv-serie hoorde, was ik geïnteresserd, maar ik was bang dat het onderwerp (de allereerste telefoonsekslijn in Nederland) te sexy zou zijn voor mijn vriendin. Tot mijn verbazing vond ze het juist leuk en hebben we samen de hele serie gekeken. Ze genoot vooral van de historische blik over Amsterdam, de stad waar ze woont, en dat was inderdaad een sterk aspect. Persoonlijk heb ik ook erg genoten van Joy Delima, die zo charismatisch en overtuigend was. Helaas was het narratief te onhandig om echt geweldig te worden, maar voor een Nederlandse serie was het zeker goed.

Notes: To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but my girlfriend was eager to check it. Well, it turned out to be one of these typical Dutch romantic-comedies and I'm afraid I'm not a huge fan of the genre. At least, I have to admit that it wasn’t the worst of the bunch but it was still nothing really remarkable. At least, even though I have heard about Eva van de Wijdeven, it was nice to finally see her in action as she is really charismatic and it would be really neat to see her in a more interesting project.

Dutch translation: Eerlijk gezegd verwachtte ik niet veel van deze film, maar mijn vriendin wilde hem graag zien. Nou, het bleek een van die typisch Nederlandse romantische komedies te zijn en ik ben bang dat ik geen grote fan van het genre ben. Tenminste, ik moet toegeven dat het niet de slechtste was, maar het was nog steeds niet echt interessant. Hoewel ik Eva van de Wijdeven (zie boven) al kende, was het leuk om haar eindelijk in actie te zien, want ze is echt charismatisch en het zou echt leuk zijn om haar in een andere film te zien.

Notes: The main reason why we tried this TV-show was because my girlfriend is from Africa. We did watch at least one full episode (maybe even two?) but, to be honest, I didn't like it much but, fortunately, my girlfriend wasn't not really impressed either so we stopped right away. In fact, if you ever wonder if such TV-reality shows are fake or not, you should definitely check this one out. Indeed, I believe that, how weaker and how cheaper the show, how easily you can come to this conclusion and this show was a perfect example. I mean, everything was so staged, every piece of dialogues was so obviously written in advance, it was actually more pathetic than really entertaining, I'm afraid. It's too bad because the concept had actually some potential.

Dutch translation: De belangrijkste reden waarom we dit tv-programma probeerden, was omdat mijn vriendin uit Afrika komt. We hebben ten minste één aflevering gekeken (misschien zelfs twee?), maar om eerlijk te zijn vond ik het niet zo leuk, maar gelukkig was mijn vriendin ook niet echt onder de indruk, dus we zijn er meteen mee gestopt. Als je je ooit afvraagt of zulke tv-realityshows nep zijn of niet, moet je deze zeker bekijken. Inderdaad, alles leek zo nep te zijn, elk stukje dialoog was zo duidelijk van tevoren geschreven, het was eigenlijk meer zielig dan echt vermakelijk, ben ik bang. Jammer, want het concept was eigenlijk best leuk.

Notes: Sure, like many other Netflix documentaries, the damned thing did sound terribly gimmicky and, yet, the end-result was pretty neat after all. Anyway, even though it was in English, I knew that my girlfriend would enjoy it as well. Indeed, the thing that made me enjoy this movie even more was the fact that I met my wonderful girlfriend through a similar dating app. However, the big difference between our couple and the couple displayed in this movie was that both of them, for different reasons, were not looking for a serious relationship at all. And, yet, through fate, they had to spend 3 months together in a foreign country completely cut off from the rest of the world and, eventually, they did fall in love with each other which was just so sweet and romantic.

Dutch translation: Net als veel andere Netflix-documentaires klonk niet echt bijzonder en toch was het eindresultaat echt leuk om te zien. Hoe dan ook, ook al was het in het Engels, ik wist dat mijn vriendin er ook van zou genieten. De reden waarom ik nog meer van deze film genoot, was het feit dat ik mijn geweldige vriendin via een soortgelijke datingapp heb ontmoet. Het grote verschil tussen ons stel en het stel in deze film was echter dat ze allebei, om verschillende redenen, helemaal niet op zoek waren naar een serieuze relatie. En toch, door het lot, moesten ze 3 maanden samen doorbrengen in een vreemd land volledig afgesneden van de rest van de wereld en uiteindelijk werden ze verliefd op elkaar, wat gewoon zo lief en romantisch was.

Notes: After 'Temptation Island', this TV-show seemed to be a logical choice and I thought the introduction was entertaining enough. However, my girlfriend didn't share my enthusiasm, above all, because it was in English whereas we saw the Dutch version of 'Temptation'.

Dutch translation: Na 'Temptation Island' leek me dit tv-programma een logische keuze en ik vond de introductie best wel grappig. Helaas was mijn vriendin niet zo enthousiast, vooral omdat het in het Engels was, terwijl we de Nederlandse versie van 'Temptation' hadden gekeken.

Notes: It was the first movie we saw together in the movie theater and it was a really nice experience. Concerning the movie itself, we both thought it was fairly entertaining but, to be honest, not really much more than that though.

Dutch translation: Het was de eerste film die we samen in de bioscoop zagen en het was echt super gezellig en een hele bijzonder ervaring. Wat de film zelf betreft, we vonden hem allebei redelijk leuk, maar eerlijk gezegd ook niet echt veel meer dan dat.

Notes: This one is actually pretty funny. I always thought this TV-show would be so lame but, at some point, my youngest daughter was watching it so I thought I might as well check it out for a few mins. Well, after all, I think I was glued in front of our screen for at least 2 hrs watching this train wreck of a show which turned out to be so addictive. Later on, I decided to show it to my girlfriend but since she is really religious, I thought she would be shocked and appalled by the damned thing and ask me to turn it off after a few mins. However, to my surprise, she got really hooked as well and we ended up watching all the seasons together. It is actually a entertaining but above all really addictive guilty pleasure but I'm glad we are done with it though.

Dutch translation: Deze is eigenlijk best grappig. Ik dacht altijd dat dit tv-programma zo slecht zou zijn, maar op een gegeven moment keek mijn jongste dochter ernaar, dus ik dacht dat ik het net zo goed een paar minuten kon kijken. Ik denk dat ik wel 2 uur achter elkaar heb eigenlijk gekeken die zo verslavend bleek te zijn. Later besloot ik het aan mijn vriendin te laten zien, maar omdat ze erg gelovig is, dacht ik dat ze geschokt zou zijn en me zou vragen het na een paar minuten uit te zetten. Tot mijn verbazing vond ze het toch echt interessant en uiteindelijk hebben we alle seizoenen samen gekeken. Het is eigenlijk een vermakelijke maar vooral verslavende programma, maar ik ben blij dat we nu eindelijk iets anders gaan zien.
