The Birth of a Nation (2016)
After two years of controversy regarding diversity and the Oscars, this is a film that seemed practically gift wrapped for them. Not only that, but the critic's reviews have been pretty positive, which resulted in it being an early frontrunner. However, the film has now been marred Nate Parker's 17 year old rape allegation against him resurfacing, which has potentially hurt this film's Oscar chances. That being said, this has sparked a debate about honoring filmmakers for their craft, regardless of their alleged actions as a person. The result; it will probably get a lot of nominations, but will go home empty.

La La Land (2016)
Director Damien Chazelle has followed his impressive previous work "Whiplash," with his next film, which seems to be a callback to the musicals of yesteryear. His name alone got people excited, but after being screened at the Venice Film Festival, the reviews have been glowing. Oscars usually pay attention to musicals, especially ones with as good reviews as this one. They could potentially be looking at not only nominations for, and not limited to, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Picture. Easily one of the ones to pay the most attention to.
