The 1970's saw nearly every major Hollywood studio flourish, releasing hit after hit and staying profitable. The one exception to this rule however was MGM. It's really very telling how the studio's two most notable events of the entire decade both involved its past. First off was the infamous 1970 auction in which countless legendary props from classic films were sold off in order to help the studio pay off its debts. Kirk Kerkorian also sold off a large portion of the old MGM backlot for his real estate development purposes. The other event was the 1974 release of "That's Entertainment", a 50th anniversary celebration film/studio clip show salute to the many classic MGM musicals. It quickly became one of MGM's only profitable releases for the entire 1970's. Due to various cost cutting measures resulting in a considerably decreased annual release slate, MGM entered into a co-production partnership with United Artists in late 1973 in order to give themselves more product. The MGM/UA partnership resulted in some acclaimed hits but not enough to change MGM's failing fortunes. As the 70's ended, the days of both MGM and UA existing as separate entities were drawing to a close.

Even with the UA co-production partnership, the total number of MGM releases for the entire decade is the smallest amount so far and did not even necessitate making two parts of five years each like I had done for the previous decades. All of MGM's feature film releases for the 70's are included here along with the usual additional wide theatrical release date, co-production credits and major Academy Award wins (very few at this point) information.
