Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
(1976)
Pink Floyd's finest. From the jazzy 'Shine On Crazy Diamond' to the almost mournful title track, this album takes you through a beautiful journey. It's a journey you'll want to make again and again, especially when the lights are out and the music fills up your thoughts.

Heart Shaped World - Chris Isaak
(1989)
This album has to be my biggest guilty pleasure. It's basically filled with unabashedly romantic songs about longing and heartbreak, delivered in Chris Isaak's smooth and soothing voice. Perfect late night listening.

MCMXC a.D. - Enigma
(1990)
Wasn't sure if this belonged here since more than one track is rather racy. Despite that, the merits of "Principles of Lust" for late night listening cannot be disputed.

Now That I've Found You: A Collection - Alison Krauss
(1995)
This album represents Alison Krauss' whole discography on this list. Her soothing crystal clear voice is made for those quite times at night when you can truly appreciate it.

Sea Change - Beck
(2002)
Beck's masterpiece and the best break album ever made? Possibly so.

Talkie Walkie - Air
(2004)
French electronic duo, Air, know how to set the mood for late nights. The bewitching 'Cherry Blossom Girl' is a great example and so is the final track 'Alone in Kyoto'. The music just comes to you in soothing waves.

Time Without Consequence - Alexi Murdoch
(2006)
Alexi Murdoch pairs his voice with an acoustic guitar and the result is quite startling. His smooth and deep voice is just made for late night listening.

Carried to Dust - Calexico
(2008)
Calexico are a quintessential Californian band, mixing the sounds of Southern California and Mexico (hence their name). Their lovely guitar playing really shines here.

Sweetheart '09: Our Favorite Artists Sing Their Favorite Love Songs... - Death Cab For Cutie, Katy Perry, Devotchka, Department of Eagles, Jessica Lee Mayfield, Ben Bridwell
(2009)
Indie artists cover their favourite love songs, released on the Starbucks label. Some really good acoustic pop music makes the cut here. Holds up very well as an album too, sustaining the mood, despite so many artists on once disc.

When you're up really really late into the night, or up really really early, it doesn't matter which, you need good music. These are my favourite albums for such situations.
