July to August 2017 Tomatometer Predictions

Sort by: Showing 14 items

Tomatometer Guess: 90%. After being one of the highlights of Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland's Spider-Man gets his first full feature outing in the MCU.

Actual Score: 93%. Spider-Man: Homecoming has exciting action scenes, a pitch perfect performance by Tom Holland as the eponymous web-slinger, and tells a heartfelt story about coming of age. It doesn't quite meet the highs of the Sam Raimi movies, but it definitely doesn't quite reach the lows of the Amazing Spider-Man films either.

Tomatometer Guess: 91%. The third installment in a series of prequels to the 1968 Planet Of The Apes.

Actual Score: 94%. Wow, just....wow. Those were my thoughts as I left the theater. War For The Planet Of The Apes is an impressive film on many levels.

It works as a worthy fitting conclusion to the Planet Of The Apes reboot franchise, continuing the themes of the first two and tying into the original film in subtle and clever ways.

While the action sequences are very good, they are not the focus of the film. The focus is on character development and the drama between the apes and humans. Woody Harrelson chews the scenery as the villainous Colonel and Steve Zahn as Bad Ape provides some much-needed levity to an otherwise serious and bleak film.

This is easily one of my favorite movies of the year. See it as soon as you get the chance.

Dunkirk (2017)
Tomatometer Guess: 81%. Following the far-out Interstellar, Christopher Nolan comes down to earth with this gritty war film set during World War II.

Actual Score: 93%. Dunkirk is an intense, exciting, and surprisingly optimistic film with great action sequences, fantastic acting, and a surprisingly uplifting message.
JWR's rating:
Tomatometer Guess: 51%. Luc Besson returns to the world of Sci-Fi with this extravagant space opera.

Actual Score: 58%. Valerian is a flawed and uneven, but still entertaining film by Luc Besson.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 89 Average listal rating (60 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.2
Girls Trip (2017)
Tomatometer Guess: 30%.

Actual Score: 88%. Whoa, did not expect this kind of score.

Girls Trip is surprisingly funny and heartfelt comedy with a touching message.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 491 Average listal rating (327 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.7
Tomatometer Guess: 65%. From the Director of John Wick and based on the graphic novel "The Coldest City" comes this action thriller starring Charlize Theron as an MI6 spy in the Cold War.

Actual Score: 74%. Atomic Blonde has enough great action scenes and a unique enough artistic style to make up for its convoluted story and odd pacing.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 236 Average listal rating (195 ratings) 2.3 IMDB Rating 3.2
Tomatometer Guess: 17%.

Actual Score: 6%.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 313 Average listal rating (204 ratings) 4.9 IMDB Rating 5.6
Tomatometer Guess: 46%. Based on the Stephen King Novel of the same name and starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.

Actual Score: 18%. Incoherent and uneven, The Dark Tower is a sloppy and rushed adaptation that crams several books worth of material into 90 minutes, leading to a film that will confuse moviegoers and anger fans of the source material.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 149 Average listal rating (95 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 7.3
Tomatometer Guess: 93%. Katheryn Bigelow returns to direct a retelling of the now infamous 1967 Detroit Riots.

Actual Score: 88%. Detroit is an intense, hard hitting, and suspenseful retelling of the infamous Algiers motel incident of 1967 that is both faithful to actual events and shockingly relevant in today's racial environment.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 79 Average listal rating (55 ratings) 5.5 IMDB Rating 5.9
Kidnap (2017)
Tomatometer Guess: 35%.

Actual Score: 41%.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 240 Average listal rating (187 ratings) 5.9 IMDB Rating 6.5
Tomatometer Guess: 12%. Sequel to the "much-beloved" Anabelle tells the story of how the titular doll came to be.

Actual Score: 70%. Though Anabelle: Creation has a rather slow first act and suffers from some Horror cliches, it's a marked improvement over the original with more effective scares and better atmosphere.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 34 Average listal rating (27 ratings) 4.9 IMDB Rating 5.4
Tomatometer Guess: 23%. You'd have to be absolutely nuts to find somebody who was asking for a sequel to The Nut Job, yet, here we are.

Actual Score: 15%. The Nut Job 2 is as expectedly mediocre and lackluster as its predecessor is, but at the very least it's inoffensive and forgettable, unlike The Emoji Movie.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 302 Average listal rating (220 ratings) 6.9 IMDB Rating 7
Logan Lucky (2017)
Tomatometer Guess: 80%. Steven Soderberg comes out of semi-retirement to direct what is essentially the southern Ocean's 11.

Actual Score: 93%. Steven Soderberg's first film post-retirement is sharp, funny, and fun.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 313 Average listal rating (222 ratings) 6.4 IMDB Rating 6.9
Tomatometer Guess: 36%.

Actual Score: 38%. While it probably won't stick in your head after seeing it, The Hitman's Bodyguard is a fun, if uneven late summer flick.

Another summer, another list predicting their reception.

We begin July by getting ready for our HOMECOMING, shortly before we go fighting in two wars: one for the PLANET OF THE APES and another in DUNKIRK. Then, we visit the CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS for our GIRLS NIGHT. Finally, we'll dye our hair BLONDE and visit the DARK TOWER across the street.
