12 Years a Slave (2013)
Technically great but a lack of flow and an abrupt ending hurt it. No surprises to be found here but the film does it's job. Great acting (minus Brad Pitt) and a brilliant score from Hans Zimmer are pluses.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
The movie mostly suffers from just not being that interesting. Christian Bale was great though.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Occasionally funny but it's so unironically cliche that it's hard to enjoy.

Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013)
Even though it offers no particularly innovative or even interesting ideas about relationships, Blue Is the Warmest Color succeeds by simply having good pacing and the 3-hour run-time feels necessary not because there's a lot happening but because the scenes take the time they need to fully develop and as a result it doesn't even feel like a particularly long film.

Chanthaly (2012)
A good slowburn horror movie, though "horror" might be a stretch. I think what's most impressive is how good this movie looks considering the budget of I believe $5000, and I don't usually like the look of things shot on digital. It does lack "impact" I guess but there's some really cool ideas and it was nice to see a horror movie where the last act wasn't just bullshit jump scares over and over again. A breath of fresh air in the current horror market for sure. Definitely look forward to Mattie's next film "Dearest Sister".

Despicable Me 2 (2013)
Extremely predictable and cliche but it is funny and entertaining and that's all I was really expecting.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Escape from Tomorrow (2014)
One of the most admirable films I've ever seen. Escape from Tomorrow is a surprisingly uncomfortable movie, so I guess it's pretty effective despite being a horror movie secretly filmed at Disneyland.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Evil Dead (2013)
Dumb characters, awful acting, bad CGI. Pretty standard horror affair.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Melodramatic, underwritten and a bit stale, Garden of Words is saved by it's brief 45 minute run-time, a beautiful score and the incredible advances in the blending of CGI and traditional animation on display.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Gravity (2013)
Though impressive technically it's a bit of a bore, likely because I can't see in 3D.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Her (2013)
Best film of the year and one of the best films I've ever seen. Fucking magical.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
A lot extremely interesting ideas and it's also pretty funny and has a good number of cringe inducing scenes. Besides some questionable logic it's really damn good.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013)
I wasn't really into it at first. It felt overly scripted and flashy and a bit unnatural but as it went on it started to take on a bit of a Sans Solei vibe with the gentle narration and stock footage and it began to feel a bit hypnotic and pleasant. Eventually, even the unbelievable and overly scripted parts became interesting and I really like that the movie is taking the time it needs to fully develop.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013)
The story goes in some really bullshit directions and none worse than where it goes with the ending. It just gets completely ridiculous.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Oldboy (2013)
Probably the worst movie I've ever seen. Good thing it was fucking hilarious.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Only God Forgives (2013)
The most basic revenge plot imaginable with Ryan Gosling once again playing cardboard. Extremely boring and stylistically Refn's least impressive film.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Pacific Rim (2013)
Occasionally entertaining but mostly just a CGI headache. It's essentially Transformers but less self-aware.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Hitoshi Matsumoto has been generally consistent but with "Scabbard Samurai" and now "R100" we have two consecutive average films from him. R100 suffers from just not being that funny most of the time.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
A decent concept so badly conceptualized that its hardly coherent. The cinematography, sound design and use of slow-motion were absolutely abysmal and the CG, while better than most things, was still not done well enough to suspend disbelief. Add a dreadfully plain soundtrack and some of the worst editing I've seen in a while and you've got this shit-fest.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Steins;Gate Movie (2013)
Even though the plot feels forced, it takes you on a nice little emotional trip back through the Steins;Gate canon and is generally a good time.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Stoker (2013)
Bad everything. Completely ridiculous plot that is never engaging or interesting. Even Park Chan-wook's cinematography doesn't help.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
It's not as mind bending as it thinks and is a little too preoccupied with tying everything up nicely but it is definitely entertaining, beautifully shot and the soundtrack is great.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Under the Skin (2013)
It has some nice shots and some really cool effects but for the most part the film fails to be entertaining or interesting. It just kind of meanders through its very basic story without much care towards theme. The score is pretty neat though.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Upstream Color (2013)
I thought I understood this movie until the ending, so I looked it up and it turns out I was pretty off-base and I liked what I thought was going on more than what was actually going on. Either way, it is a really good movie with an excellent score and is well shot.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
V/H/S/2 (2013)
Not nearly as good as the first. The concept holding these short films together isn't as well constructed and, though the shorts are all decent, it doesn't reach the highs of it's admittedly inconsistent predecessor.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Brilliant in terms of concept and humor, "Why Don't You Play in Hell?" lives up to it's promise of being the perfect midnight movie.
Ueno_Station54's rating:
Quentin Dupieux's films always have a strange beauty to them... until this that is. Apart from one brilliant scene at the end there's nothing remotely funny, entertaining or even weird about it.
