This is the mother and father of all great scifi epics. In case you thought the original Star Wars was awesome and timeless, then watch this and learn something new about yourself. IMO this is the best thing there is, or will ever be. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is so good, it will ruin other similar series for you.

Gargoyles (1994)
The single greatest thing Disney has ever released on television. Gargoyles is more or less their answer to Batman with many of its original creators involved. The epic storylines make this much better in my opinion even though Batman has better single episodes.

Darth Brutus's rating:
A legendary true crime series from Finland and one of the best shows ever produced in that country. Most of the cases are so famous people still talk about them and many of the policemen interviewed are still commonly seen and heard on many similar shows. A classic among classics.

The style of this anime combines everything that was fun back in the mid 80's, it even has a killer soundtrack. The series was sadly cut short because of some legal issues and the plot never really went anywhere. We never even got to know the main characters nor their motivations.

Twin Peaks (1990)
Truly one of the greatest television shows ever made. First half of the second season is weak and lacks focus, which is why it's this low on my list.

Darth Brutus's rating:
Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin is a very flawed series and clearly made with very lacking budget, but the story is so good, the bad stuff doesn't matter at all. This is like Seven Samurai of anime, the idea is very original, characters are legendary, the drama is spot on, the stakes are high and the darker stuff is always present, and the catchy music itself is beyond anything you have ever heard. The theme song especially will play in your head for the rest of your miserable life after the very first listening.

Finnish people have been obsessing over this thing for decades now, and the manga is one of the all time best-selling ones in the country. If you haven't seen it, you have no soul.

Batman is still the gold standard of television animation. If you haven't seen any of this stuff, then shame on you.

Darth Brutus's rating:
I love the offbeat humor of S&M. It's kinda metahumor, where the purposefully broken rules of storytelling, incredibly difficult innuendos and overall insanity are part of the charm. The language used is overtly complex and so rich of color and mood it's unnatural, but extremely fascinating. Sam and Max is unique specimen still to this day.

Hello kiddies! You want some good old horror comedy, grotesque characters and playful tone with A-class production values and some offbeat early 90's bliss? You can't go wrong with Tales from the Crypt, especially the uncensored version. Other than the last few seasons everything about this show is just pure quality. The final episode is the purest form of mid-90's fun as you can ever get, it's also the best episode of the whole series in my opinion.

Rocko's Modern Life might just be a near perfect product of early 90's post-80's era: both its visual style and humor draw heavily from underground comics and indie films, the characters are more down to earth and largely based on real life events and real people compared to any escapist scifi fantasy cartoons of the 80's.

Oh yeah, and the humor here is very adult, but since it was treated like a kids' show Rocko had to pass the censorship. That's why the famous humor's mostly very sneaky playing around with subtexts, Freudian symbolism, reading between the lines, wordplay, irony and stuff you barely every see or hear in most shows, and even then most people just simply don't get it.

As a result Rocko can be re-watched any time and still find something fresh and new you missed the last time.

Kaiba (2008)
Other than the rushed ending, this show is fantastic. It's different than any other anime ever, but Masaaki Yuasa is just like that. This show was inspired by one and only Doug TenNapel, who you might know from Earthworm Jim, he's something of a cult figure in Japanese animation circles.

Animaniacs (1993)
Until I saw Rocko's Modern Life, I thought Animaniacs was the highest point of 90's animated comedy. Now I think it's close second, since Rocko took the same concept even further and had even more genius writing, but at this level it's more or less just apples and oranges. Animationwise Animaniacs still rules like it's nobody's business, the remake is just a lazy clone.

Darth Brutus's rating:
This show is like the single most popular television cartoon in Finnish history. It has had dozens of reruns, re-releases and stuff, every episode is legendary and the voice actors are some of the best ever. I remember watching this at least twice or thrice when I was a kid, and later multiple more times. And it still rocks, a true classic beyond ages.

I think this is where the 90's golden era finally ended. Extreme Ghostbusters isn't just more adult and ambitious than most other cartoons, but they went full horror here, something which hasn't ever been replicated on this level. Every episode's even supposed to have multiple references to classic and more obscure horror films most people haven't even heard of. Extreme Ghostbusters was a rare specimen, which eventually led to its downfall.

Darth Brutus's rating:
If you have never heard of this show, then you're most likely not Finnish or Dutch. Alfred J Kwak is like precursor to upcoming 90's classics with it's super high quality animation and mature writing that still has much to offer to both adults and children alike. There are DVD boxes around still to this day, but they are extremely expensive, since people love this thing and are willing to pay crazy sums to get it.

Not kidding, this show is awesome. Like really really good, the writers took their job seriously and aimed the thing for adults rather than just kids. The first two seasons are some of the best western television animation ever. It's officially on youtube so there's no excuse not to watch it.

Courage was such an unique specimen. One big reason why it works so well is that the creator clearly deeply understands his horror tropes but at the same time he also has mastered the art of comedic timing.

Postmodern technological paranoia with a healthy dose of surreal psychological horror. Nothing about this show makes any sense, but the mood and "the effect" are there and they will mess up your mind.

Want to get creative? Gumball is like a reincarnation of Ren & Stimpy, but with more modern techniques and vibes. Literally anything can happen any time and the mood can go from childish to horror in a second, plus all the dirty humor.

This is easily the best animated show of 2010's

East meets West, and the result is a killer show with a lot of anime influences mixed with western comic book style visuals and storytelling, including furries, evil wizards, giant monsters and all the other good stuff. Too bad it was canceled because of some moral panic of the early 90's, they were really getting good with the later episodes. The animation quality of this show has definitely stood the test of time.

Fist of the North Star has to be one of the most amusing and entertaining manly macho bullshit anime ever made. The story tells about a martial arts guy who basically just beats up bad people to death in a post-apocalyptic world. No stupid philosophies or melodrama, just manly men doing manly things.

Simple as'.

Darth Brutus's rating:
What a wonderfully weird and creative show this is! Popee the Performer is like Japanese low-budget version of early 90's western cartoons but with PS1 quality animation and completely silent and visual off-the-wall humor. I love it.

Darth Brutus's rating:

At first I thought this series was flawed, but still highly entertaining. After watching the second season I found it masterful and seriously fun cartoon and overall one of the best in ages, maybe even in decades alongside that caveman cartoon of Tartakovsky's.
Darth Brutus's rating:
Off-brainer. If it wasn't for that stupid last few episodes, this would be one of the best. If you count the film as the legit last ep, then it is.

Darth Brutus's rating:
Wing Commander was Mass Effect of the 90's. This overlooked little cartoon was their shot at animation, clearly done by fans who know and love the series. They got everything right, even the actors from the games are present here. Too bad this blew up and nobody saw it, Wing Commander Academy could and should have been a big thing.

Darth Brutus's rating:
Duckman is my kind of adult animation. These guys don't just use the opportunity to throw some dirty jokes, but everything about the series is very adult, beginning from the language used, all the references and even the more adult mood of many, many great episodes you couldn't ever show on Nickelodeon. Even Homer Simpson makes a cameo in one episode.

The very definition of creative madness. Most other similar shows can only dream of having nearly as inspiration as this little monster. The quality took a noticeable dip after the first two seasons, but the creativity and many artistic choices they made even after the dip are still genuinely unique and worth being studied even to this day.

The X Files (1993)
It's 90's time, baby. Back in the day this show was the shit, it had everything that teenagers of the time loved to death, like conspiracies, horror, mystery, action...

The last two or three seasons were pretty bad since David Duchovny fed up with the thing and disappeared, Gillian Anderson followed soon after and the rest was produced using other actors. The end wasn't bad because of them, but the whole show had ran out of steam by then.

Oh yeah, that's Yamaha DX7 making that theme melody.

The Finnish translation and dubs are some of the best ever. They added so much local and inside humor it almost steals the whole show. Too bad this was cancelled just when things were getting interesting.

Darth Brutus's rating:
Holy frigging hell this show is funny. Imagine that great action scene from Rambo 2 but extended into 65-part tv series. That's all there is, few minor spoken words and lots and lots and LOTS of over the top action where Rambo pretty much smashes entire armies, sinks warships and shoots down planes and nuclear missiles.

I'm not even kidding. Take everything that was great about 80's action films, make everything more over the top and you'll get this meme machine right here.

It's hilarious, they still had to adjust to the censorship and moral policing of the time. Even when Rambo shoots people, he still loves kids and animals and freedom Ameica patriot fuckyeah, so butchering swarms of enemy soldiers with hyperrealistic guns and bombs is all fine and dandy.

God, I love this thing. It's so unintentionally funny.

Darth Brutus's rating:
This show was years ahead of its time. Pretty much every great 90's animator, writer and voice actor worked on this under the direction of Ralph Bakshi himself. If it wasn't for that stupid cocaine scandal this could have become even bigger than it eventually did, but on the other hand the cancellation let a lot of its creative team to pursue another projects, which eventually led to the cartoon revolution of the 90's.

I don't really enjoy watching other than animated TV shows.
