Idina was the Original Elphaba in both the Broadway and West End (London) productions. She won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal.

Stephanie was the original Elphaba in the 1st National Tour, for which she won a Helen Hayes Award in 2006 for Best Actress in a Non-Resident Production. Although the production began on March 9, 2005, Stephanie did not begin until April 13 due to a back injury sustained during technical rehearsals.

Teal was originally cast as the Standby Elphaba in the Los Angeles production, a role she played from 01/01/08 - 05/11/08. She originated Elphaba in the San Francisco production. Due to health issues, Teal took a leave of absence from 03/20/09 - 05/02/09. Although she was still officially billed, the role of Elphaba was played by standby Vicki Noon during that time.

Amanda was the first Australian to play the role of Elphaba in a full-scale production. She opened both Australian productions of Wicked, however the actual duration of her tenure as Elphaba is debated. Due to health problems, Amanda officially withdrew from Wicked in February 2010. However, there were large chunks of time in which Standby Jemma Rix played the role.

Amanda's last performance in Wicked was 11/05/09, regardless of an official statement.

Donna began her Wicked journey as the 1st National Tour's Standby Elphaba from 11/26/07 - 11/02/08.

Marcie's journey with Wicked is arguably the most interesting. She first began as an Elphaba Understudy on the 1st National Tour in 12/2006. She left the tour in 12/2007 to play the role of Nessarose in the Los Angeles company.

In 04/2008, the Elphaba Understudy was injured and Caissie Levy was forced to perform on a reduced schedule due to health issues. Marcie then assumed the position of Elphaba u/s, while still playing the role of Nessarose (the only other woman who has done this is Jenna Leigh Green). She began to Standby for the role in LA on 05/14/08 during which she was asked to lead the Broadway production. She left her Standby post officially on 11/02/08.

Marcie was the original Elphaba on the 2nd National Tour.

Nicole was the first Elphaba on Broadway to have had no experience in the role prior to her first show.

Jemma Rix (nรฉe Stevenson) began her Wicked career performing the role of Elphaba in the Original Cast of a condensed, 30-minute version at Universal Studios in Osaka, Japan in 2006. The production contained a hybrid of English and Japanese lines. She was then tapped to stand by for Amanda Harrison when the first Australian production opened in 2008. She ended up performing most of the shows due to Amanda's constant absences, and eventually took over for her in Sydney.
