Who would have thought that the story of a camel rejecting her baby could be so beautiful?! I've watched this twice and could happily sit and watch it again, this is such an engaging story and the family filmed are great to watch.

Grizzly Man (2005)
I watched this the whole time thinking 'this guy is insane'. Werner Herzog narrates the personal diaries of Timothy Treadwell (a man who comes across as troubled and delusional) whom sought some sort of personal refuge in wild bears.
Treadwell films himself on his mission to 'protect' these huge bears.. which, unless I'm mistaken, was mostly filmed in an area which was already protected land for these creatures?? Ultimately his obvious inexperience leads to his death and that of an innocent friend. Compulsive viewing.

This is one of the most vivid depictions of the horrors of Nazi Concentration Camps.
A short but powerful documentary. The use of video footage and photographs charting what happened during this time in history is brutal yet honest and not for the faint-hearted. To think that this was a ground-breaking documentary filmed in 1955 and yet still packs an almighty punch to this day.
A haunting but important watch.

The Bridge (2007)
This is a documentary exploration of the mythic beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge, the most popular suicide destination in the world, and those drawn by its call.
An insightful and yet sad documentary. The use of real filmed footage makes sure that the brief stories of the people concerned are going to stick with you after you have stopped watching.

A look at the annual journey of Emperor penguins as they march - single file - to their traditional breeding ground.
Documenting nature at it's most beautiful. A story that is mostly uplifting, sometimes sad, sometimes funny - but one for the whole family to watch.

Blackfish (2013)
A documentary following the controversial captivity of killer whales, and its dangers for both humans and whales.
I guess when you're a child and you visit the sea life centres it never really occurs to you how the animals come to be there. Well, here it is - no rescuing but stealing animals for the public's entertainment. Then when the animals have had enough of containment? ..
Watch this. Then make the informed choice to observe such creatures in their natural environment and not captivity.

Filmed over a 10-year period, Making a Murderer is an unprecedented real-life thriller about Steven Avery, a DNA exoneree who, while in the midst of exposing corruption in local law enforcement, finds himself the prime suspect in a grisly new crime.
Completely engrossing, frustrating and one that'll have you talking about everything you view within!
Having seen similar crime & court based documentaries I have learnt that whatever you are presented with here and now is only the tip of the iceberg, so I hope there will be a continuation.
Chani's rating:
Nick Broomfield's second documentary on Aileen Carol Wuornos, a highway prostitute who was executed in 2002 for killing seven men in the state of Florida.
Follow-up (see below) with flashbacks and more depth plus more footage of the woman in question.
Fascinating and tragic.
Chani's rating:
Filmmaker Nick Broomfield explores the troubled life and deadly end of female killer Aileen Wuornos. Filmed after Wuornos was imprisoned but before she was put to death, the documentary highlights the media blitz surrounding her case
Despite a genuine interest in the case shown by the filmmaker, most of this highlighted the self-promotion of Wournos' "lawyer" & "adoptive mother", with only one interview with the killer herself shown.

Religulous (2008)
Bill Maher's take on the current state of world religion.
I guess if you are a deeply religious person you won't see how funny this documentary is. Allowing the fact that this has been edited in the most wise-arse way (funny) & completely in favour of Bill Mayer (still funny) but it just goes to show how many self-professed religious leaders/preachers/followers etc. have no idea what they are talking about - or even better, interpret religious writings to suit themselves.
Entertaining to say the least.

Documentary about Father Oliver O'Grady, a Catholic priest who was relocated to various parishes around the United States during the 1970s in an attempt by the Catholic Church to cover up his rape of dozens of children.
Incredibly disturbing - this docu delivers the heartbreak of the parents of a child abused by this predatory paedophile priest, aswell as the priest himself nonchalantly talking about what he did and frankly *is* (in scenes whilst stood besides a playground WTF?!)
The Catholic Church has a lot to answer for.
Memorable for the wrong reasons.

Documentary following Susan Tom of Fairfield, California and her 11 adopted special needs children.
An engaging portrait of one family's challenges as they go about their day to day life. Be prepared for tears - I found this quite heartbreaking in parts.

Bully (2012)
A documentary on peer-to-peer bullying in schools across America.
I know a documentary does it's job when it makes me feel a range of emotions for the subject topic and people concerned - Bully does just this.
An important issue that is not going to go away in a hurry but this is well worth the watch. Maybe the creators can do a follow-up and approach the bullies and their parents (it seems that the parents of bullies are never held responsible for their child's actions!).
Oh and the high school principle shown here.. what an ignorant, patronising and self-absorbed c*nt!
Chani's rating:
The story of the child refugees who were transported to Britain to escape the Nazi Holocaust.
First-hand accounts tied in with black & white photographs/video footage bring you the memories of the individuals who were the Kindertransport child evacuees.
These unforgettable stories of hope, loss & courage make one incredibly moving documentary.

Showing the horrendous effects of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's oppressive regime, his decision to ban contraception and abortion as a way of increasing the country's work force resulted in a generation of children born into a nearly incomprehensible state of poverty and destitution. CHILDREN UNDERGROUND focuses on five abandoned youths, who live, sleep, and scrounge for food in a Bucharest subway terminal.
Very insightful but also depressing and difficult to watch at times. As far as documentaries go, this should be on the 'important' watchlist.

A filmmaker sets out to discover the life of Joyce Vincent, who died in her bedsit in North London in 2003. Her body wasn't discovered for three years, and newspaper reports offered few details of her life - not even a photograph.
Very thought-provoking and probably a sad indication of how people (your friends & family even) can disappear off the radar so easily.
Chani's rating:
Filmmaker Werner Herzog travels to Antarctica to capture its landscape's rarely seen beauty on film.
I couldn't help but feel that this documentary dragged on a little - however, I did appreciate the scenic shots, scientific effort shown, seal song & bizarre little penguin!
Chani's rating:
A horrific triple child murder leads to an indictment and trial of three nonconformist boys based on questionable evidence.
A horrible case & a documentary that raises questions but truly left me baffled, especially when a spanner is thrown into the works during the trial.
Although I couldn't help but wonder why - if the boys were innocent - they didn't actually say so on camera at any point?!
Chani's rating:
Paradise Lost 2: Revelations is the 2000 sequel to the documentary film Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, about the trial and conviction of three teenagers accused of murdering three young boys in a Satanic ritual abuse.
Follow-up (to the above) which unfortunately still raises more questions than it provides answers.
Worth watching for the additional info [and change of guilty person(s) direction] but a lot of this consists of flashbacks to the original documentary.
Chani's rating:
People who added this item 88 Average listal rating (52 ratings) 7.7 IMDB Rating 8.1
A further investigation into the arrest of three teenagers who were wrongfully convicted of killing three young boys in Arkansas and spent nearly 20 years in prison before being released because DNA evidence proved their innocence.
Yet more twists in the story. How awful that it seems now that probable innocents paid the price in order to quickly do away with this case. Even in the end, though better for some, there is a feeling that people just want to forget the murders ever happened. So much for justice.
Chani's rating:
People who added this item 62 Average listal rating (37 ratings) 7.4 IMDB Rating 7.9
An examination of a failure of justice in the case against the West Memphis Three.
I expected this to be a straight follow-on from the first 3 documentaries (see above), but it was actually more of a summary of the whole case.. + this had more focus on the people outside the case who fought for justice.
The docu' is compelling yet infuriating on many levels.

Ukerewe Island, in Tanzania is home to a large community of people who live with albinism. While many albinos are killed at birth or rejected by their families, those who survive risk being murdered for their body parts. Told over the course of five years, In the Shadow Of The Sun tells the story of two members of the Tanzanian Albino Society.
A documentary that should be more widely viewed than I feel it is.
How sad that there is still such ignorance and lack of education in the world. You really feel for the people suffering within these societies.

An exploration of the intersection between religion and homosexuality in the U.S. and how the religious right has used its interpretation of the Bible to stigmatize the gay community.
This docu' shows true examples of families who have dealt with the conflict of their religious (Christian) beliefs that homosexuality is wrong.. and having a gay child.
Thought-provoking & quite sad in parts.

Babies (2010)
A look at one year in the life of four babies from around the world, from Mongolia to Namibia to San Francisco to Tokyo.
A simplistic documentary with no narrative - just vignettes spanning a year of 4 babies from different parts of the world. Interesting to watch for the cultural aspects ~ and the babies are completely adorable too.
Chani's rating:
Alex Gibney explores the charged issue of pedophilia in the Catholic Church, following a trail from the first known protest against clerical sexual abuse in the United States and all the way to the Vatican.
Unfortunately a familiar topic which thankfully, because of the courageous people such as those shown here, has been (and continues to be) exposed.
This documentary delves a little deeper and informs you of just how disgustingly close to the catholic hierarchy child abusers exist and the levels to which it has been covered up.
Yet another reason to question "religion" and it's worth.

A group of brave individuals risk their lives to save the last of the world's mountain gorillas; in the midst of renewed civil war and a scramble for Congo's natural resources.
A mixture of nature, conflict and corruption - strong characters and an ongoing plight that shouldn't be forgotten once the documentary has ended.

Afghan Star (2009)
A look at how contestants on the musical contest program "Pop Idol" in Afghanistan risk their lives to appear on the show.
An eye-opening look at the culture and traditions of Afghanistan and it's relationship with music.
You get a view of the different attitudes of many individuals and the underlying religious aspects that demote what is meant to be harmless 'fun' for the people living there.

Documentary on the Friedmans, a seemingly typical, upper-middleclass Jewish family whose world is instantly transformed when the father and his youngest son are arrested and charged with shocking and horrible crimes.
A strange one.
Whilst quite engrossing to watch this is another docu' where you never really get to the truth in the story. Thought-provoking & a bit sad also.

This documentary is about the day-to-day working of a juvenile liaison section attached to the police force in Blackburn, Lancashire back in 1968 as it deals with young offenders. Intended for police, probation officers and social workers, it is an interesting snapshot of how juveniles were dealt with in the 60s.
How times have changed!!
Sometimes harsh but I couldn't help but laugh in moments too (mainly because of the difference in attitude & standards). The general idea of the Juvenile Liaison system they were using was/is a good idea (IMHO) but by far could have been executed in a more appropriate way.. but was it effective even then? - "See part 2!"..

Nick Bloomfield's sequel documentary reacquaints us with the lives of the children and officers and examines the scars left by the stark events of Part I.
Much of this is recaps of clips shown in the first documentary, but it does catch-up with a few of the 'juveniles' shown - with quite mixed outcomes..
Chani's rating:
Oscar-winning film that documents a murder trial in which a 15-year-old African-American is wrongfully accused of a 2000 murder in Jacksonville, Florida.
I found this both compelling and scandalous! How hideous that the police dept. leading the investigation (or lack of) in question were shown-up in the most embarrassing courtroom scenes. Such a shame for the boy & family that had to go through this too.

This film follows the story of two very different girls from two very different worlds becoming sisters. Masha Rusin has just been adopted into fourteen year old Cami Diaz's family. Masha grew up in a Russian orphanage. Cami was raised in Wisconsin and has been the exclusive focus of her parents love her entire life. The process of Masha becoming part of the Diaz family is going to change both girls forever.
An interesting story and probably one to watch for any person/family thinking about adoption!

Nick Broomfield digs into the case of the notorious serial killer known as the Grim Sleeper, who terrorized South Central Los Angeles over a span of twenty-five years.
A good documentary which left me thinking 1. how are the police able to get away with blatant ignorance of such a crime? 2. "Two wrongs.." complaining about the police not doing their job whilst at the same time refusing to contemplate reporting any sign of crime (snitching) is ridiculous! 3. when did any persons life become so invaluable?
One of the main issues here is obviously race. A serial killer on the hunt in a black neighbourhood wasn't of great importance to the police - truth. Yet how important was it to the community? given that so many talked about not "snitching", covering up evidence no questions asked and ultimately laughing about the crimes in the aftermath?

The Testimony (2015)
The conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has cost more lives than any other since World War II. THE TESTIMONY chronicles the largest rape tribunal in Congo's history, offering an unprecedented glimpse into the lives of its women and the unshakable strength of the human spirit.
".. In November 2012, the M23 rebels drove the Congolese Army out of the Eastern city of Goma. Shamed and demoralized, government soldiers retreated to Minova, where they systematically raped hundreds of their own civilians."
Lets applaud the authorities that react to international outrage by setting up trials to hold those soldiers accountable.. or not (if you've seen this you'll understand what I mean) - but apparently it's a start!
More power to the people - women & girls especially, who have found the strength and voice to try to change their nation and their place in it.

A documentary on Al Gore's campaign to make the issue of global warming a recognized problem worldwide.
Fact-filled and informative. I like that it is filmed in a way which isn't overly scientific to a point that it would just bore people into not watching. Contains a bit of a fear-factor too.
This is one that should ultimately give everybody something to think about.

Filmmaker Michael Moore explores the roots of America's predilection for gun violence.
I found this docu really interesting as it highlights an obsession with guns, but more so the fact that people can legally own guns and so freely promote them to their children.. oh and the fact that you can buy bullets at the local supermarket - WTF!!
A thought-provoking watch.

Michael Moore's view on what happened to the United States after September 11; and how the Bush Administration allegedly used the tragic event to push forward its agenda for unjust wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
A case of taking the good points with the bad, critically said to be biased but overall interesting to watch.

Cropsey (2009)
Realizing the urban legend of their youth has actually come true; two filmmakers delve into the mystery surrounding five missing children and the real-life boogeyman linked to their disappearances.
This is interesting and at times plain creepy yet fails somewhat in terms of linking in facts and real truths.
The crimes that formed the basis of the 'urban legend' I wanted to learn more about but the documentary couldn't really offer anything substantial.

A documentary that examines the 1989 case of five black and Latino teenagers who were convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park. After having spent between 6 and 13 years each in prison, a serial rapist confessed to the crime.
Another story of police incompetence and injustice, this time containing interviews with the accused and police recordings rather than actual court case footage.
It beggars belief that such crucial DNA evidence is often what is ignored when they wrongfully jail people.

A film about denial, race, family secrets and a search for identity.
Once you know the story.. How incredibly selfish that this mother tried to hide this secret (yet in plain sight!). Fair play to daughter & father who had the most difficulty dealing with the consequences of such an ignorant lie.ย
Another thing noted from this - I'm always bothered by the fact that mixed-race/bi-racial people seem to have to "not sit on the fence" and claim themselves to be whatever they look most like (in other individuals eyes) - if that makes sense. Embrace and own all your heritage and f*ck whatever others want you to be! Best of both/multiple worlds if you like?!

Soldier Girls (1981)
A documentary about women's basic training in Fort Georgia.
Dated now (released in '81) but strangely more humourous than I would have imagined!
Throughout I couldn't take the Sergeant(s) seriously - lots of berating recruits (with some unsurety at times) - apart from one momentary speech which was quite poignant.

An original documentary which follows three families in a small seaside town in Massachusetts as they prepare for their annual home made haunted houses.
Worth a look if you are a big Halloween fan but be warned that this is very slow-paced. This consists of the people behind the planning & making of "home haunting" so you see the passion and stress behind their obsessive hobby.

A documentary on the life and career of Joan Rivers, made as the comedienne turns 75 years old.
I found this quite humbling. Nice to see the alternative Joan Rivers.. not just a funny & ballsy comedienne but also a relentless, hard-working & ordinary woman. I expected some diva moments in there but the reality was endearing.

A compilation of interviews, rehearsals and backstage footage of Michael Jackson as he prepared for his series of sold-out shows in London.
Musically, this was outstanding & very entertaining to watch. Not as intimate a portrayal of MJ the man but rather an insight into his creative self and how much work he, and those filmed, put into what looked to be an amazing tour had it happened.

Call Me Kuchu (2012)
In Uganda, a new bill threatens to make homosexuality punishable by death. David Kato - Uganda's first openly gay man - and his fellow activists work against the clock to defeat the legislation while combating vicious persecution in their daily lives.
Engaging and upsetting. I think this is a must-see for those interested in the struggles of the LGBT community in parts of the world where you know homophobia to be so rife that people would never be brave enough to have a positive voice on the matter, let alone 'come out'. A Luta Continua!

Girlhood (2003)
Documentary chronicling America's justice system. Follows two female inmates - victims of horrific violence and tragedy - who are serving time in a Maryland juvenile detention center.
Pretty sad. A little glimpse into lives and incidents that you wouldn't want for any child and the documentary only scratches the surface with these two cases. Although a little dated now, I'd quite like to see the females concerned revisited, it's one of those that makes you ask "I wonder how things turned out in time?".

Chain Camera (2001)
Award-winning director Kirby Dick gave video cameras to 10 students to record their lives at Los Angeles's John Marshall High School with no limitations on what they could shoot. After one week, the cameras were given to 10 new students, and so on, forming a virtual chain letter and a portrait of young America at the turn of the 21st century.
An interesting idea that doesn't fully pay off.
For some of the kids shown, their sections were a little interesting - but others I just didn't care less for.
