True, being a hater is a waste of energy. So why do we love hate lists so much? Entertainment, of course! Why do you think that George Carlin's dark, misanthropic comedy has become another I Ching for so many people? Embracing our dark side can produce great material. At least we aren't going on a killing spree.

Top ten and top five lists are popular. Top tens are especially popular considering that ten is perhaps the most psychologically satisfying number. You don't see too many top 73 lists.
