Children of Men (2006)

Mix some Sokurovian long takes with some high concept sci-fi and you get a dish of stylish entertainment. The minimal amount of special effects, and the effective use of steadicams, heighten the realism and intensity.

This little known Iraqi War movie was actually filmed during the Iraq War! I can't imagine a more dangerous - albeit more authentic - way to depict these events.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)

It was pretty disturbing to watch these Japanese soldiers come to terms with the fact that they were hopelessly overmatched by a superior military. Yet it is always memorable to see how people act in such dramatic circumstances.

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.

I have included a small explanation for people who may not have heard of the film.
