Battle Royale (2000)

Shot in a manga style, filled with shocking scenes of teen violence, and starring Beat Takeshi himself, this film shocked the world. But, to Battle Royale's credit, the film still holds up as satire and social commentary, transcending its initial "shocking" status.

The moody style of Bela Tarr works well to tell this tale of Whales and small town chaos.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

This Chinese historical drama was accessible enough to become a major hit in the international market. The story was easy to understand and the action scenes were impressive - especially back in 2000. Even all these years later, the film is still solid fun to sit through.

The first film in the "bunch of unrelated stories that intersect" genre, is still the best. Maybe it's all the star power, but 21 Grams and Babel don't really do it for me.

I believe this silent short is about 100 years late to the party. Regardless of that, the film is frantic craziness done right.

Gladiator (2000)

I have fond memories of Gladiator, because of the fact that the filmmakers tried to mix the CGI seamlessly with real footage, instead of trying to create the biggest CGI spectacle.

Traffic (2000)

Although it seems more cheesy and melodramatic now than it did at the turn of the century, Traffic is still pretty good drug drama.

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.

I have included a small explanation for people who may not have heard of the film.
