It follows a group of fictional characters whose lives are irrevocably transformed by the cataclysmic tsunami in Thailand on Boxing Day 2004 - a young couple searching for their child; a Thai survivor who loses his family and tries to prevent developers from seizing the land his village is built on; an Englishwoman whose husband and son are missing; an ambitious reporter; a relief worker; an overwhelmed British official whose faith in the system is torn apart; and a leading Thai meteorologist, whose earlier report warning of the inevitability of a tsunami was ignored. Abi Morgan, responsible for some of the best British TV drama of recent years has once again created a riveting drama, and regular BBC collaborator Bharat Nalluri (Spooks, Life on Mars, Hustle), directs the harrowing tale with great sensitivity. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sophie Okonedo head a cast full of well-known faces, including Gina McKee, Hugh Bonneville, Tim Roth and Toni Collette, all of whom are magnificent. The surprise comes from newcomer Samrit Machielsen as Than, the Thai waiter, who puts in an incredible performance.
