A top drawer adaptation

This film is one of the rare ones (which for me at least) that outdoes the book. Transforming the lead from a spoilt silly girl into a sultry alluring heroine.

Catherine Morland is so absorbed her world of fantasy that when introduced to Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor she is unable to distinguish fact from the stories she has created within her head. This of course results in ... read more

Quite Good

This is based on my least favorite Austen novel--I always thought the whole gothic satire thing was a bit weak (but I still really like the book.) So this movie didn't blow me away, but it is certainly very enjoyable. The script adheres very closely to the book, and Henry and Catherine are exactly as I pictured them. I really enjoyed Felicity Jones--she's quite cute.

Catherine Morland is taken to Bath, England by the wealthy Mr. and Mrs. Allen and introduces her to Georgian society. There she meets the social-climbing Isabella and John Thorpe, the handsome Henry Tilney and elegant Eleanor Tilney. After making an impression on Henry and Eleanor's father, the Tilneys invite her to their country mansion, Northanger Abbey. Catherine falls in love with Henry but realizes that love can be fickle and that money - and not just love - is an important consideration in the marriage business. The story is based on Jane Austen's novel of the same name, "Northanger Abbey." (from imdb.com)

The Sensationalist

“N.B. I’m against classifying made-for-TV movies as “TV”—are there episodes? What’s going on in people’s heads that this is called “TV”?

Okay.

…………………Well, I’m on the wrong side of the Ethnic Miracle for Irish nationalism in the USA, and the wrong generation for it—some people stay very set in their ways until the end, at least in petty ways: the old Irish man in America might vote for reactionary I-am-the-Man politics, but he’d never watch a Jane Austen movie—and the wrong age, too. Oftentimes growing up we live in the world, the headspace, that our parents returned to when they nested, that of their youth, and then we grow up and think, The hell was that all about right?

Which is a long-winded way of saying that I” read more
