I am currently redesigning and adding new features to the item pages e.g. /movie /game /book etc.... and will be releasing this by the end of the week.

I thought I would start this thread to keep all ideas relating to this page in one place. Feel free to copy ideas from other threads.

These things will definitely be going in the next version :

- better layout
- View all people who want or want to see an item
- View all people who have added favorites
- View custom lists for an item
- Add links to resources and reviews around the web
- Add recommendations for other items.
- Show the 5 most voted images and the 5 most recent images (instead of the 18 most recent images as it is now)
- Ability to view full cast list

Please post about the item page only in this thread!

we have Directors and Cast... what about Writers?

Possibility to add AKA's to movie titles. Many foreign movies have several prominent international (English) titles. Also many English language movies have alternative titles.

Suggestion: In the "edit item", alongside "Title (English)" & "Title (As Released)" you could have a few lines for AKA's. It would also be nice if you could find the item by searching the AKA.

DVD's: If your going to combine all the dvd editions under one main entry, it'd be nice if the main entry would be linked with the movie entry and vice versa ("see movie entry"/see dvd entry") Or at least that you could import info from IMDB for the dvd's as well. Don't know how that works for box sets, though.

For Movies:
- ability to re-order cast, similar to drag'n'drop of new custom list re-ordering? this would be useful for certain films that have 'cast in order of appearance' or 'cast alphabetically', causing the main actor to be buried in the cast list
- i second the idea for 'writers' section, which links to authors pages (so we can see if the writer did other screenplays or novels)

For Music:
- ability to add/edit track listing
- add category for 'country of release', as some releases had extra tracks in certain countries

For TV Shows:
- this may be too much, but maybe add category for 'Status' and allow the following: 'On Air', 'End of Season', 'End of Series', 'Mini Series', 'Cancelled', 'Special', 'Pilot', and 'Undetermined'.
- add category "Latest (Last) Season Aired"

For Games:
I've been quite active in this section lately, so my suggestions are more geared towards the Games section.
- Instead of 'Manufactured by', call it 'Published by', and allow this to be edited
- add category 'Developed by' (VERY important thing that is currently missing; the developer studio is like the author of the title, and to not display who worked on it is a shame) - no need to auto-fill it; allow us to edit it and we will handle it well.
- add category 'Format' for entries like '3.5" disk, CD-Rom, DVD-Rom, PAL, NTSC, etc...
- allow us to specify YEAR only or MONTH/YEAR only, as many early game titles are vague and I can only find year of release, not exact date
- make 'Platform' fixed/preselected categories only, to prevent people from typing in NES instead of Famicom and NES. basically, make it a drop-down selection box with a list of pre-approved platforms.
- tricky suggestion, but i'll mention it anyways: ability to weed out duplicates and junk from the games databases. there's so much crap like t-shirts, posters, game cables, and game bundles (amazon might choose to sell 2 or 3 games bundled but each is still a completely seperate boxed game) that it really clutters up the database. i know its more database related suggestion that page item suggestion, but if there was a way to add a checkbox to 'flag' items as junk or dupes, which would put them on a list to be looked at by moderators, that would be great.

sorry, didn't see this thread when i posted the following in another thread:

"how about an additional field for alternative title like in the movie items for all categories. this would solve the problem of music, games etc. with umlauts and other language-specific special characters. as of now you only have one field, and that is most often entered without those characters, but in an anglicized format. also if i search for Jรผrgen i don't get a result, even if someone entered the exact item as Juergen. Maybe there is a way to "map" characters in the search, like when you search for Jรผrgen he maps it behind the curtain to Juergen and displays the correct item with umlaut as result."

basically what DaleCooper suggests, only i think it makes sense for all categories.
Sandrick 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 15 2:50 -
For Movies & DVD:
- The ability to add/edit cast & crew (Director).
- Rendering the Region for a DVD in list view (owned, wanted, search results) the same as the items. See this Region 3 Pan's Labyrinth for an example.

1) I'd love to be able to search all item types at once.

2) Gamer tags:
"I'm not altogether sure how tags and things work, not having Wi-Fi or anything of that sort, but I've witnessed some easily setup games on the Atari forum courtesy of friend code and username threads. I'm thinking, you know that spot under games that's empty where the others have favorites? Of course more information could be allowed for expression of one's taste, but online gamer criteria and games played with them seems to be as good a knowledge as anything. I'm not sure how it'd work - gamer tag specified on the outset, you leave some sort of a mark courtesy of an item system that supports this on the games you play, and maybe you can even search to find Listal users you've played against online."

So basically there'd be criteria in the console pages for gamer tags, enterable by members, and a review-style manner of listing all the games played with. Or something similar. It fits the purpose of the site magnificently.

3) Checklist-style criteria. As in, for TV you can run through a list of episodes and to the right is Watched. Or for Games, specifically trading card games (a few of which I've noticed on here), you could have an item page for one booster pack with the normal specifications, but in addition to other parts of the item page you have a list of cards from one to whatever. It'd give us an edge if we appealed to collectors of those kinds of things. I'd be perfectly willing to upload card images and item pages if you don't have a way of importing this to Listal, Tom.

I think I'm talking about the right page here, but could you order the reviews of an item by number of votes? That seems like a logical thing to do.
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 15 13:16 -
I personally prefer the idea of seeing the reviews by the date they were posted, because I always take that into consideration when reading it.

Plus, I'm a cynic and I can completely see people taking advantage of that: Those who really loved the movie will automatically vote for the review that praises the movie, while the more thought out reviews that might nit pick at some things in the plot could be left at the bottom.

Item Descriptions:
Those who edit the summaries and what-not don't get points, right? Has there been any thought to maybe attributing a few points to that so people will make more of an effort to fill in some kind of description for the movie? Though I guess that also has disadvantages in terms of people filling it up with garbage just to get points.
coroner 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 15 19:00 -
First of all, sorry for my bad English :(

1) Cover art, photos, screenshots

- Is it possible to have 2 or 3 different sections (one for posters, one for screenshots, ...)?
- I'd like to see a "Total number of pictures: (xxx)"
- Adding an option to sort pics by views/votes/most recent?

2) Any chance to add a section for:

a) Remake of [movielink] or Remade as [movielink]
b) Sequel of [movielink] or Prequel of [movielink]

3) I really like the "Add recommendations for other items" option! How will it work? Each user can add a title, more than one? Or will it be done automatically (tags/votes in common)?

Thanks for your answer!
Sandrick 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 15 19:46 -
Coroner has some interesting ideas here.

#1 - It is rather arbitrary to allow any user to change the primary image on a whim. I feel votes would work well here. A seperate screenshots heading would be a welcome addition.

#2 - I was wondering myself about creating a form of "connective tissue" between items. A way to link movies to their remakes and sequels. Or movies to their DVD releases.

As an aside, I wonder if cast & crew information would be best served by being available only in Movies. It would allow for the DVD section to be based on the quality of the disc (Commentary, image transfer, sound fidelity, features, assorted extras) and not a rehash of ones feelings about the film. Just some food for thought.

#3 - Recommendations seems nice, but I wonder how feasible it would be to implement. A metric would be too complex. Allowing users to add recommendations the way we add items to lists might be too random or messy. As it is, I tend to navigate the tags to find new films/books/movies that pertain to elements I enjoyed.

I agree with this sentiment. The point requirements should be raised for editing items now that more options are becoming available. People still abusing the system can be banned, and items can be returned to an earlier state by way of moderator.

You're top dog here. You could talk like a Narut and we'd still respect the mere grace of your presense.
- Is it possible to have 2 or 3 different sections (one for posters, one for screenshots, ...)?

Some people like to view screens and some like to view official art and posters. Good suggestion.
- I'd like to see a "Total number of pictures: (xxx)"

This will be necessary.
- Adding an option to sort pics by views/votes/most recent?

You mean how when viewing collections this is done? It doesn't affect the default order, but it's good for running through.
2) Any chance to add a section for:

a) Remake of [movielink] or Remade as [movielink]
b) Sequel of [movielink] or Prequel of [movielink]

I posted the following in another thread:
2) There are going to be too many 'Official Series' lists. When you edit items I'd like to see the possible option of 'Sequel' and 'Prequel' for Books, Movies, and Games, with 'Spin-offs' for TV Shows and some sort of follow-up/predecessor for Artist discographies and their subsequent countries.

'Remake' and 'Remade' should be added as well.
3) I really like the "Add recommendations for other items" option! How will it work? Each user can add a title, more than one? Or will it be done automatically (tags/votes in common)?

Thanks for your answer!

Too many sites do it based on tagging and visitors of several items. You can see something completely irrelevant on Amazon because someone happened to buy Nazis in the Summertime immediately after purchasing Clifford the Big Red Dog. The suggestion in bold is the one I think Tom should implement. Either that or something in the vein of NINRemixes.com, where you can specify different qualities and searching can be based on that.

big NO on that. There is one site (movie listing site) that allows user image uploads, votes, and most voted/rated image is set as primary. needless to say, all actors are in their shirtless vogue poses, and all actress are in bikinis or underwear.

The 'set primary' is working ok for the time being, very little (if any) abuse going on, and if it does start getting abused in future, i think it would be best to let the mods sort it out.

But i really like the following of Coroner's suggestions:
- ability to sort images by votes, date, views
- the prequel/sequel/remake/remade idea is interesting, but will be taken care of by custom lists. example, make a custom list called 'Indiana Jones series', and ever indiana Jones films gets automatically linked up via that list. and in the custom list, it can be sort chronologically with even date, and more information added to each entry.

Sandrick 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 15 20:30 -
Hmm. Hadn't considered that. Of course, right now it would only take one person to change a pic, and they could do so with impunity. With a vote, you only get one chance. But then again, I also tend to be leery of "the wisdom of crowds".

The current system is working well so far. No need to fix what isn't broken.

Except for what Thilian does with those Clifford Dog posters. sicks sick boy.

Well, I've noticed that some people do their movie rating and reviewing only on the dvd pages. So if you would have a main dvd entry (sort of non-edition), under which you would have the different editions, then you could have the movie info on the main entry and the tech info under the different editions. I'd really like to see a tech dimension on the DVD pages as well as a movie dimension. Maybe a possibility to rate image quality etc.? Or separate reviews for movie and tech info?

First of all this would be a huge help to store the relatinos of different items. But i think it would be better to have a "official" list for each item. This would allow all users to contribute information or items to that list.

2. I would like to have more datafields available to add the locally used title of an item ("Pirates of the Caribbean" "Fluch der Karibik"). Would be the first step to support more languages in future.

I think both should be at play. The new Notes feature gives an advantage to the informational aspect of lists, giving them the advantage as far as aesthetics but the disadvantage as far as being able to perform all the functions because the whole item page isn't available.

Support for different languages and characters would help. Especially for artists like in Sparkly Dragon's threads.

For books:
We really need a way to link all those different editions to one literary work. I mean, doesn't matter which edition of "1984" you have, it is still the same novel.
When one searches, the engine should return this one item, in which all the different editions would be listed.
As it is now it is too confusing to be useful.

I love the latest changes as well. Thank you for your hard work!
Sandrick 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 22 21:12 -
I don't know that Tom would be able to coordinate placing all items (books or otherwise) under a collective work.

LibraryThing does this quite effectively, but I don't know whether other Listal users would prefer this method to the current system. I get the impression that most folks on the site are using Listal for their collections, in these cases it's preferrable to know that you own a specific edition of a work rather than just a copy of the work. For example, in DVDs I want to know if I have widescreen vs. fullscreen, or Region 1 vs. Region 2. In the case of books I want to know if I have a specific publishers edition, say Library of America vs. Bantam. Their are disadvantages to the current system; reviews, tags, and lists are split up across different publications of a work. However, these divisions among publications allow us to review, tag and list according to what makes that particular edition unique. Which, in and of itself, is useful.
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 22 22:05 -
Editions should be included in the next update. I have no idea if tags and other things will be included for editions, though.
Sandrick 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 23 22:56 -
I would like to suggest a "tag-rename" feature akin to what delicious uses. So that a user could rename a batch of tags in one fell swoop (within that specific media type, ie DVD, music, etc.). This enable users to streamline their tags by making them as uniform as possible.
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 24 1:28 -
I agree. It would also seem to be easier for the database in that points aren't jumbled constantly for members changing the way a tag or two is spelled. Not to mention you often have to open up the product page because you've tagged an item so much you can't simply click the plus-sign from your collection.

Here's one more: Some kind of report button on the item pages, like the one we have for videos and pictures. In case there's something wrong with the item in general: duplicate entry, information missing, page doesnt't display properly, improper item, etc.

Or do we have this already, but I'm too blind to see it?

We really only have the forums right now. There's some shyness in that that'd be fixed with a report button. Some online communities have authoritative and iron-fisted admins, so people are used to being careful about approaching for help. Further promotion of a friendly environment (as the site is geared already) and the mentioned buttons would certainly help.

I'm not sure if it's good to have videos placed above director & cast in movies. Examples:

www.listal.com/movie/letters-of-love-1995

Of course, not all the titles have that many videos. But I suspect the amount will increase over time.

I like the changes to the layout, but I agree with Dale that director and key actors (or in case of books, authors) - this info gets buried by the videos.

- Top right blue bow is excellent! i like being able to quickly jump to reviews, pictures, videos, or lists, and it looks very neat and organize, and most importantly easy to navigate

I'll look over the new layout in more depth tonight and post more comments later.

Another vote for director/cast above videos on all pages. If anything it's vital info for music/books, since many authors/artists can release an album with the same title.

ok, using this as example:
www.listal.com/movie/the-golden-compass

You have trailers section, and also a Videos section. The trailers alone push the director and cast so far down the page (4 scrolls on the wheel mouse, way too much) and once people post Youtube video clips, it will be even further down. And another bad effect it causes is that custom lists get pushed ever further down, past cast and all videos.

but i see the dilemna. you want videos exposed (and they are good thing to expose) and right panel get pretty crowded with reviews (better now that you started truncating them). and putting the videos/trailers below the cast, well, you then have a similar situation where movies with very long cast list push the videos too far down.

what if vids got placed below the director/actors cast list, but truncate the cast to only director line plus only 2 or 3 lines of actors lines. and maybe only show small thumbs (no text) for actors, with list to 'Full Cast list' that would have entire full cast plus big thumbnails, names, and maybe even 'character' names the actor played. Doing a mouse-over on small nameless thumbs on item page would show actor name.
Next dilmena is which select few actors get shown in those 2 or 3 lines? maybe do voting per movie? or maybe add option on cast page to 'mark as primary character' and only have 12 to choose?

basically, i think the videos/trailers/cast section needs to be resolved when you're ready to update the cast list section of listal.

see, the video sections actually looks and works great on the game items, but games don't have a 'cast'. and the books section, well, i can't think of a single reason to have a 'video section' for book pages. :) and definitely its not good to place some blank 'Video' and 'Trailer' mumbo jumbo blank wording and then show the author of the book, it really distracts that section.

so yeah, i really like this latest update, but the movies section could use some re-organizing with the cast list, and the book section might be better off without any video section.

I bring the tally from individual opinion to coincidence to popular vote. Also, I'd like it if Lists were on top of Videos, since listing is the site specialty.

or what about keeping 'trailers' on left panel, above cast, but put 'videos' back onto right side, above pictures section?

And then show only the Top 2 trailers with link to 'viewl all trailers' if there are more, such as the Golden Compass.

What if each section was slightly different, depending on the medium?

MOVIE Section - LEFT SIDE
| Movie Poster | Description | Trailer (truncated?) | Cast List (truncate?) | Custom Lists | Favorites

MOVIE Section - RIGHT SIDE
| 'Blue box' | Ratings box | Videos (truncated?) | Pictures/Posters | Reviews

GAME Section - LEFT SIDE
| Game box art | Description | Custom Lists | Videos | Favorites

GAME Section - RIGHT SIDE
| 'Blue box' | Ratings box | Pictures | Reviews

BOOK Section - LEFT SIDE
| Book Cover | Description | Written by | Custom Lists | Favorites

BOOK Section - RIGHT SIDE
| 'Blue Box' | Ratings box | Pictures | Reviews
* note: no videos section for any books

MUSIC Section - LEFT SIDE
| Cover | Description | Artist(s) | Custom Lists | Videos | Favorites

MUSIC Section - RIGHT SIDE
| 'Blue box' | Ratings box | Track Listing (with sample audio clips?( | Pictures | Reviews

TV Shows and DVD sections would be similar to Movies section, except eventually add Episode or Season info to TV shows, and group different versions and special editions into one for DVD sections

I like all these trunkating ideas. Especially cast list, but I would like to see thumb size and actor names remain as they are now. The video and trailer section could also do with trunkating, but I feel it'd best to keep them close together, since they're essentially the same stuff. Of course, if you want some extra attention to the trailers, couldn't you fix some kind of notice "SEE TRAILER" or whatever at the top of the page?

Next dilmena is which select few actors get shown in those 2 or 3 lines?

I guess this'll sort itself out if and when we get full editable cast lists. For the most part, the stars are at the top of the list already.

Is it possible to have 2 or 3 different sections (one for posters, one for screenshots, ...)?

I hope nobody's forgetting this brilliant idea from Coroner? Right now the current system is keeping me from adding screenshots.

Nothing can be added if it's .gif, it's gotta be .jpg/.jpeg. You should absolutely add screens if you have them in format.

Well it's no big thing changing the format. The thing is, it just looks messy if the posters and screenshots are in the same section. Once you put them in separate sections, you can always add more images and it'll look good.

I think it's still best to post screens now. I haven't gotten many up myself (mostly been focusing on covers and official art), but they're rutty helpful. Sometimes that's all you want to see, and this is why the back of the box occasionally has more views than the front.
