Bitterly Disappointing

I am a fan of the book, but will admit that it is not brilliant writing. But there is something in the book that makes it gripping and intelligent. But it is very complicated. And there was no way that they could stay completely true to the book. But the screen adaptation has lost that "something" completely. The special effects are marvelous, and costuming and stylization was pretty much how... read more

I can't believe the movie got such bad ratings. Books are books, movies are movies, these are adaptations for the big screen. People still enjoyed Harry Potter's books and movies despite the fact that they differed slightly.
Now, I admit I haven't read the Northern Lights series, so I'm really reviewing the Golden Compass movie.

As a movie, it's an enjoyable one for the entir... read more

Movie Reviews (1001-1050) (50 movies items)

" The Downs: Impressive child actress debut that overshadow some of the more established Hollywood faces. Interesting premise that make me want to at least read the books sometime in the future. Beautiful effects. The Downs: Overproduced and never manage to grasp the universe heads-on and the rich person gallery doesn't shine as much through as it could as if the director really don't care about this movie and there seems to be huge plot gaps in the film. It is also a shame that people couldn't "

Brilliant To The Awful - Movies Watched In 2015 (229 movies items)

"This was planned to be the first of three movies to have been made based on Philip Pullman's book trilogy but unfortunately things didn't go as planned and only this one has been made so far. This movie boasts a lot of very beautiful special effects. The ice bear is a marvel to watch and the daemons are a wonderful addition to the story. The script is not very strong and needs the effects to push it along. It is not a very inspired movie and has a great deal of low points. Sam Elliot is the best"

Movies That Were Hilariously Sure Of A Sequel... (10 movies items)

" The Cliffhanger: Not really a cliffhanger, but the movie is based on the first in a series of novels, and does its best to establish this world and leave room wide open for a sequel. What Happened? The response was lukewarm, to say the least. Even though it wasn't a big flop, it didn't light the box office on fire, leaving the studio to wonder if a sequel would be worth the investment. 8 years on, and no sign of a sequel has materialised."

"42% Consensus: Without the bite and controversy of its source material, The Golden Compass is reduced to impressive visuals overcompensating for lax storytelling."

Review of The Golden Compass

“In the flurry of generic YA novel adaptions currently on the market - a newly created genre that shows no clear signs of stopping before 2017 - one would have to look several years back to remember the book-to-film trend that preceded these. This much more rewarding niche genre was the children's fantasy novel adaptations. Starting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 2001, dozens of other books/films have attempted to duplicate the boy wizard's box office. And while many such attempts were fairly entertaining (such as Spiderwick Chronicles and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events), disappointing box office returns (or lack of interest) prevented many would-be franchises from getting off the ground. The Golden Compass suffered the same fate, making very little profi” read more

“This movie is well produced and has a perfect role, but I don't know why, the story seemed very boring to me on the way Chris Weitz directed. It could be better, I believe that some important scenes could be more breathtaking, and I got really disappointed with the end, it led me to vacuum because it has no sequel.” read more
