Netflix Instant Project for 2014

Throwing my support behind: Wake in Fright

Recommendations for August:
Dark Touch - www.listal.com/movie/dark-touch
An incredibly disturbing horror that, while not necessarily scary, sure keeps you feeling all sorts of uncomfortable throughout. Basically it's Carrie meets... pedophilia? It's more tactful than that sounds, I promise.
Berberian Sound Studio - www.listal.com/movie/berberian-sound-studio
An extremely weird horror film about Toby Jones who works as an audio technician on an Italian horror film. Sometimes I couldn't help but want to see that Italian horror film instead of this one, but all in all this is such a weird experience I can't help but recommend it. Keep your speakers turned all the way up.
Throwing my recommendations behind:
Sound of Noise
Indie Game: The Movie
So yeah, Sound of Noise has a comment over at my film journal. Didn't love it but it's strong enough to be worth watching at the small run time it has. Indie Game: The Movie I'll just recommend because it contains a however brief glimpse at the glory of Giant Bomb via one Bradley Shoemaker, despite not loving it. Or hating it. It just sorta is.

Recommendations for September:
The Grey Zone - www.listal.com/movie/the-grey-zone-2001
This is a film about the holocaust starring David Arquette. David fucking Arquette. How good it is will shock you just because of that douche.
Detention - www.listal.com/movie/detention-2011
If you don't like this movie, you'll hate it. Haaaate it. I think it's worth the risk, as it is one of the most positively insane films I've seen in years.

Kinda surprised to see Old Yeller and Swiss Family Robinson qualify for our project. I thought both were standard childhood viewings. Course, I haven't seen either since I was really young so whatever my ratings are for each are probably inaccurate. Perhaps I'll revisit them soon....

Throwing my support behind: A Hijacking (think it's the last one on the entire list at this point)

Throwing my support behind: The Dark Half - which leaves Instant on 10/1 if anyone else wants to catch it in time.

Recommendations for October:
The Double
Journey to the West
Yeah, I know they're not horror recs, but they're among the best I watched in September so I'm getting them in now.

Throwing my support behind:
The Double
The Hunt
I can't not support The Double as it contains a cameo song performance from Finland's most regrettable musical gift to the world, Danny. The Hunt is just a darn fine film.
Recommendations for October:
Shivers - www.listal.com/movie/they-came-within
Hoop Dreams - www.listal.com/movie/hoop-dreams-1994
Both are un-starred by me so I've seen them way too long ago. Shivers I recall being a rather disturbing, zombie-ish action horror from Cronenberg. A bit different than his usual fare, but still effective. Hoop Dreams is just a darn masterpiece of a documentary everyone should see at least once.

Recommendations for October:
King Kong '76
Cheesier than the other two versions, but it has a couple of my most memorable movie lines in it and this version has Jessica Lang.
Invaders from Mars
Been a long time since I saw this movie, so I don't have it rated, but I do remember liking it when I saw it back in the 80's - I forgot that Tobe Hooper directed, so I might have to watch this one again myself.

So I noticed tonight that portlander has left the site. As a result I'm rebuilding the list for this project. I'm 2/3 of the way done & in need of sleep, so as soon as I get time I'll drop back in and finish it.
Just wanted to make sure others know. And of course once it's complete I'll drop back by here with the link to the resurrected list.

The list is back up now & can be found here.
If I find the time I may go back in & include list links later on as I liked having those built in last year. But at least for now we've got a list again.

Indie Game: The Movie
Young Sherlock Holmes
Two good films! I'm biased when it comes to video games and Indie Game is a cool look into the industry that avoids a lot of the gross, terrible parts of games and it's fans. Probably because it's about indie games and not big AAA ones.
Young Sherlock Holmes is a classic, just plain fun. It's one of those movies I can casually watch again and again and still enjoy.
I really wanted to like Anatomy of a Murder, but i was left feeling a little underwhelmed. I blame my overexposer to crime and courtroom dramas, and my general dislike of putting rape on trial.

Phase IV - www.listal.com/movie/phase-iv
The only feature Saul Bass ever directed, and it's just as good as what you might think that dude could turn out. Who is Saul Bass? Well, remember an awesome opening credits sequence between the 50s and 70s? He probably made that. And he made this movie. It's a horror movie where ants take over the world. It's so weird and special and I love it and I really need to watch it again.
Dormant Beauty - www.listal.com/movie/dormant-beauty
Now, I'll admit; this Italian film is no classic. But it's a damn strong step-up from similar films where multiple threads circle around one topic, in this case euthanasia. It's no Magnolia but it's way better than Crash. I'll just throw it out here for the sake of diversity.

I just added Phase IV to my queue this week, so hopefully I'll throw some support behind it soon. List is updated again.

List updated! And that gives me another reason to finally watch Baron Blood since it's been in my queue for over a year now. Been curious about Witching & Bitching too since it popped up.

There's quite a few Bava movies on Netflix, I'd say Baron Blood is the best one.
Witching and Bitching is an interesting Spanish horror flick, it follows the same plotline as From Dusk Till Dawn but to more comedic effect.

@djprojexion - I did a run of Bava movies last year in October, so I've seen quite a few of them. I didn't make it to Baron Blood at the time though. So far of the ones on Netflix Bay of Blood is my favorite.

Now, I did not finish it. I had to leave the screening early. But I promise you this: It is an Alex de la Iglesia -movie. As much as any movie can be.

Recommendations for December:
The Taking of Deborah Logan - www.listal.com/movie/taking-deborah-logan
It's a film about Alzheimer's. I feel like saying more would be spoiling. You shouldn't know more about it either. Well, it's good. And it's terrifying. That's it. Go, shoo. Watch it.
Happy Christmas - www.listal.com/movie/happy-christmas
My obligatory Christmas movie of the year, by Joe Swanberg. It does 2 things very well: does exceptionally well: 1) It explores the idiosyncrasies of language that pop up in our everyday lives nowadays โ what we want to say, and what we really say. 2) It provides plentiful video footage that Swanberg's baby really is incredibly adorable.

Since this movie won't be on Netflix by the time 2015 starts, I recommend checking out The Gambler before it leaves.

@moviewatcher122 - Thanks for the heads up! I may get it watched before it's gone then. I've got tomorrow mostly to myself so I plan to run through as many exiting films as I can before the year ends.
