We Are The People We've Been Waiting For is a 75-minute documentary feature which examines the worldwide crisis in modern education. It observes how millions of young people are essentially being failed by the system and explores alternative ways of tapping into the reservoirs of talent that exist in the generation that will inherit the very complex world we have created.
Incorporating anecdotal observations of students and teachers, together with evidential contributions from a wide range of international experts in education, the film aims to humanize the crisis and provoke a re-evaluation of the purpose of education.
The documentary is anchored around five young Britons in their final year of formal education. They come from Swindon, considered to be the microcosm of British life in the 21st Century. Here they have all had the same educational opportunities – indeed, they could easily have attended one another’s schools – and yet, even the most successful student exposes the depth of the systemic failure in education.
Through their experiences and comment, paralleled with the views of young people from all over the world, we observe the depth of the issues associated with education and the challenge associated with effecting change.
In addition, their experiences are enhanced by comment from contributors including:
• Henry ‘The Fonz’ Winkler - Actor, Director, Producer and Author
• Sir Richard Branson – Founder of the Virgin Group
• Bill Bryson – Author
• Germaine Greer – Academic, Journalist and Professor
• Sir Ken Robinson – Author
• Sir Michael Barber – Former advisor on education to Tony Blair
• Dame Ruth Silver – Principal, Lewisham College
• Eve Gordan – Head Teacher Met West High School, San Fransisco
• Jan Johansson – CEO/Principal, Volvo Academy at Gothenburg Technical College, Sweden
• Robert Cassen – Professor in Social Policy, London School of Economics & Political Science
• Governor Bob Wise – Former Governor of West Virginia, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education
• Cream Wright – Global Education Chief, UNICEF
• ….. and many young people from around the world.
An Inconvenient Truth showed us the devastating impact of our behaviours on the environment – it taught us emphatically that it is up to us to make the changes necessary to avoid our planet facing destruction.
We Are The People We've Been Waiting For aims to achieve a similar response –focusing not just on the failure of systems, but more importantly how all of us can contribute to building a generation of young people equipped to solve the problems facing the world today.
