" "See, you thought I was a cripple but you didn't know that I'm a ninja." Ostensibly emerging out of nowhere, 2018's Upgrade is one of the biggest film-going surprises of the year; an old-school, dark, noir-ish sci-fi action-thriller reminiscent of The Terminator and RoboCop. Upgrade was written and directed by Australian filmmaker Leigh Whannell, who knows a thing or two about genre pieces after scripting both Saw and Insidious, among other titles. " DVD- 1hr. 39min. First Viewing A shaggy techno-thriller, Upgrade is a surprisingly sturdy film that excels thanks to some rather inventive filmmaking and black humor. The biggest mark against the film is it's story; it's solidly constructed and plotted, with some great bits of body comedy, but it gets too cliched in the last act, falling back on twists that have been telegraphed from the beginning, that are uninspired. " Note: This movie felt like a nice throwback to 80s Cyborg/Robot movies like the original Robocop and Cyborg (The Jean-Claude Van Damme movie). I was surprised at how much I enjoy this movie because I didn't think it would be good at all. The action is top notch and the movie has a lot of blood and gore similar to the old days of 80's-90s sci-fi action movies. I also like the story and how cleaver it was at times. The special effects are amazing too for a very low budget movie. "
