“Recently, Noah Baumbach really blew me away with 'Marriage Story' (in my opinion, it was even the best movie released in 2019) and since this previous directorial effort was available on Disney+, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, ever since they started to work together with 'Greenberg', Greta Gerwig has become Baumbach's muse but, to be honest, their movies start to really look a like by now. I mean, even though Gerwig can play a flamboyant self-absorbed loser who can be equally fascinating and annoying at the same time like anyone else in this business, I'm afraid I have seen her playing this character too many times by now. Gerwig and Kirke are wonderful in their roles, as are the supporting cast, and the writing matches their energies wonderfully. It's a little slow during the beginning and end, but that middle section is just so wonderful that I was able to forgive it. "
"Mistress America is supposedly a quirky homage to screwball comedies from director Noah Baumbach. I think he should had taken advice from somebody as to how to make modern screwball comedies. It's about a young woman at college who starts to hang out with her soon to be stepsister. The main problem with this movie is it isn't funny enough. It feels too much like a stage play, they literally do stand around as if they were on stage. They even deliver lines like the audience were in the same audit"
