(OK) First and less interesting of the trilogy. 'Facts of life' is the most tricky with the mischievous but loser Mai Zetterling, The kite is poor, Alien corn has a good hard ending and The colonel's lady is a good picture of a surprised patriarchal society with a poor happy ending

Master storyteller W. Somerset Maugham introduces four of his own short stories in this portmanteau collection of films. Features The Facts of Life (directed by Ralph Smart), The Alien Corn (Harold French), The Kite (Arthur Crabtree) and The Colonel's Lady (Ken Annakin). A superior cast, headed by Dirk Bogarde, Mai Zetterling and Cecil Parker, elevates these stories to a level of moving drama, wrapped in John Greenwood's aristocratic score.
