Director Carlos Diegues' vibrant update of the Orpheus myth casts its protagonist, Orfeu de Conceicao (portrayed by Brazilian pop icon Toni Garrido), as a celebrated samba musician and idol to his neighbors in the Rio de Janeiro slums.
