Description:
This documentary about music in Brazil doesn't bother much with narrative structure: It merely follows Finnish filmmaker and musical adventurer Mika Kaurismäki as he roots out vibrant scenes all over the big, rhythm-crazy country. Instead of attempting a big-picture ethnomusicological study, Kaurismäki immerses himself in the music and lets it speak for itself. And from indigenous costumed ensembles to a flat-out funk jam on a Rio rooftop, it does, with an energy that's hard to resist-it seems that every one the lens encounters is either dancing or playing.
