“The full complexity of a mother/daughter relationship gets a workout in Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig’s debut as a writer-director. It’s a disarming charmer, and one that’s fully committed towards narrative sympathy for its variety of characters. It’s equally likely to make you laugh as it is to make you cry, and sometimes it manages to switch between the two poles all in the same scene so masterfully that you barely noticed it happening. This dichotomy is there right from the opening scene. Christine, who has dubbed herself Lady Bird for no particular given reason other than that her ambitions are as scattershot as they are gigantic, and her mother have completed both a college visit and listening to The Grapes of Wrath on tape. "Lady Bird is a movie through which you re-experience all the classic hijinks you experienced when you were a teenager. I never had these experiences so I mostly come to these to appreciate the good acting and occasionally funny situations. It's OK for that."

"January 2nd- (rewatch)just as good as the first time, brilliant writing and acting! "
"Once you have got over the leisurely approach to storytelling, this coming-of-age drama is a delight, with Saoire Ronan as a girl longing to escape Sacramento to go to school in New York, yet has one more year at high school, so has to make the best of a bad thing. Ronan is superb as is Laurie Metcalf as her mother in an impressive debut for Greta Gerwin. Funny, sweet and touching, this is one of the best tales of a female crossing over into adulthood."

"1.Laurie Metcalf- Lady BirdLost the Golden Globe, but likely still the favorite, albeit a minor one. However wins the SAG this year is winning the Oscar. 2.Allison Janney- I, TonyaWon the Golden Globe, and has a great shot at winning the Oscar. 3.Octavia Spencer- The Shape of WaterMissed a SAG nod, but she's a previous winner here in a film that is one of the big Oscar frontrunners. Only #1 & #2 are locks, but she's looking solid. 4.Mary J. Blige- MudboundNo lock, but she's been scoring all"
"4 NOMS/2 WINS Best Actress - Musical/Comedy - Saoirse Ronan Best Screenplay - Greta Gerwig Best Supporting Actress - Laurie Metcalf "
"First viewing - Dec. 3rd Much ado has been made over Lady Bird, to the point where I had to check it out for myself. The cast pretty much knocks it out of the park, and all the awards buzz around Ronan and Metcalf is well-deserved. It's smart and funny and heartfelt and there's really nothing I can complain about. I don't think it's the best film I've seen this year, but I suspect it'll be in my top 10 at least. And here's hoping Greta Gerwig has more great stories in her to tell."
