To begin I must confess that Bresson's cinema I think, in general, too overrated. With the exception of "A mort à condamné s'est echappe" and some specific moments in not all his movies, the feeling that leaves me is that does not pass the anecdotic. (OK) A minor, non star, irregular Bresson, but ends fine. The hero is more a confused man and a looser than a dreamer; but, yeah, she is almost dreaming when embracing Marthe befroes her lover appears. Some rare nos interesting details....

The 'dreamer' is Jacques, a young painter, who by chance runs into Marthe as she's contemplating suicide on the Pont-Neuf in Paris. They talk, and agree to see each other again the next night. Gradually, he discovers that her lover promised to meet her on the bridge that night, and he failed to turn up. Over the next couple of nights, Jacques falls in love with her - but on the fourth night her original lover returns...
