“Since I have always been interested in Alexander Payne's work, I was really eager to check this movie, even it had been a big flop at the box-office when it was released. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be a huge failure. Indeed, even though it was Payne's most ambitious work so far, pretty much nothing worked in this movie, I'm afraid. "Billed as a comedy but I'd say it's more of a drama than anything else. It tells the story of a couple who decide to undertake a newly-invented procedure to shrink their bodies so they can start a new life in an experimental community. "A perfect example of how you have a great idea and you haven't a clue what to do with it. The first half of the movie is fascinating: the ability to shrink people in order to make more room and save the environment has so many possibilities. Yet once the premise is set, co-writer and director Alexander Payne goes way off with a romance and a preachy tale of the world ending. The first part has promise, the second is a crashing bore."
