Dr. Maurice Bucke tries to treat the patients of a horrific 19th-century asylum with more humanity, including offering educational classes. When Dr. Bucke meets famous poet Walt Whitman, his life and that of his wife and patients is radically changed. Like Dr. Bucke, Whitman has avant-garde ideas on the subject of mental illness, and his radical reputation comes as a mixed blessing.
