Unbreakable (2000)
My favorite Shyamalan movie, which isn't saying much as he only has one maybe two other decent films. What really sold this movie was the relationship between Bruce Willis' and Samuel L. Jackson's characters as well as the fact that finding out the main character has superpowers takes up a large portion of the movie.
Sovereign DC's rating:
Kick-Ass (2010)
A movie that takes a realistic look at superheros. No powers just dudes in costumes trying to stop crime. It has a more idealistic message than I thought it would.
Sovereign DC's rating:
Iron Man (2008)
This movie helped put Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. back on the map. It was also the first to start the Marvel cinematic universe.
Sovereign DC's rating:
Chronicle (2012)
A different take on the genre. Three teenagers obtain powers from a strange rock that they found in a cave. Instead of stopping crime or saving the world they decide to pull pranks and goof around. All fun has to come to end though. It kinda feels like a live action version of Akira.
Sovereign DC's rating:
V for Vendetta (2006)
An adaptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore. Set in a post-apocalyptic United Kingdom it deals with many themes but most notably government.
Sovereign DC's rating:
In a post-apocalyptic world veteran Judge Dredd is paired with a new recruit with psychic powers. He is tasked with testing her to see if she is capable enough to be a Judge. He takes her on patrol and they come into conflict with a crime lord named Ma-Ma.
Sovereign DC's rating:
This movie was a surprise in all honesty. Post Joss Whedon Avengers I thought I would never get a more serious movie from Marvel yet here it is. Unlike The First Avenger and Avengers I felt like Captain America's character was well represented here. He has never been a blind patriot. Instead he is all about the ideals America was founded upon. Great fight scenes, natural humor, good dialogue and plenty of social commentary makes this movie my favorite from Marvel yet.
Sovereign DC's rating:
The Dark Knight (2008)
What is there really to say about the Dark Knight? Not only is it a borderline perfect movie but it's also one of the few superhero movies that I think will become a timeless classic.
Sovereign DC's rating:
Tights not required. No animated movies, they will have a list of their own.
