Comments: biblical religious romantic drama; lots of drama.
Special comment: In one sense, it’s certainly a work of the 40s, about an ancient subject, although in another sense, it can be surprising what’s actually in the Bible, when you kinda let yourself think that Dickens wrote it, you know.

Shadowlands (1993)
Comments: modernist religious romantic drama; quiet.
Special comment: Kinda a coming out of the scholar shell and marrying, like a more Bible-Club-family-version of a Steve Carell movie (if you’ll forgive the anachronism).

Comments: women-centered romantic drama.
Special comment: in condensing it, (cf a movie is like a novella, and Victorian novels were even longer than today’s) Greta makes it more romantic, than the novel, which is much quieter. Also more of a woman-as-artist theme than in the 19th century original, where that idea was something that was still new, and even more controversial even than today…. I mean, it’s the same basic idea, but it is rather bolder, while still having that idealized Beth March/Marmee, etc., vibe in many of the scenes, and to some extent, overall.
