The Band - The Band
they fisrt hit the radar as bob dylan's back-up band. the 4 canadians and one good old boy from arkansas were very tight. they had 3 great singers..levon helm, rick danko, and the spectacular richard manuel.garth hudson was the musical genius that could play anything, and robbie robertson was the lead guitarist, and wrote the songs. there was contention after they broke up, as to how much help the others gave him with the writing, and why credit wasn't given when it was deserved. too bad they didn't iron out stuff like that at the time. with 3 of the 5 of them gone, we'll never know the truth.
if you have any interest in learning more about the band, check out "the last waltz". it's a film, directed by martin scorsese, of the groups final concert. it was held at the winterland ballroom in san francisco on thanksgiving night, 1976. they were joined by a who's who guest list. it's a must see for any r&r fan.
my favorite song of theirs is "the weight". honorable mention goes to "the night they drove old dixie down", and "ophelia".

With the Beatles - The Beatles
i can't imagine there was ever a musical act that took the world by storm the way the fab four did. they were supremely likeable, as well as talented. their every move was front page news, and they routinely had more than one top ten hit at a time.
my favotite song of theirs is "hey jude", with "one after 909", "i saw her standing there", and a few dozen others close behind

John Prine - John Prine
never became as popular as he should have. he's one of the best, and most prolific singer, song writers ever. if you're looking for screaming guitars and thumping base, he's not someone you'll like. if you want to hear beautiful, poignant songs, give him a listen. he's also got a great sense of humor, which is obvious when you listen to "dear abbey", "jesus, the missing years", or "it's a big old goofy world".
my favorite prine song.."bruised orange", followed closely by "sam stone", "one red rose", "unwed fathers" and "souvenirs". his songs have been covered by many artists, most notably, "angel from montgomery", by bonnie raitt.
i'd like to mention another great singer, song writer, steve goodman. him and prine were good friends, and performed together often. goodman is best known for writing, what kris kristofferson called "the best raiload song ever written", "city of new orleans". he was from chicago, and was a huge cubs fan. his song, "go cubs, go" is played after each cub home win. unfortunately, goodman passed away at the age of 36 from leukemia. if you want to get a feel for his talent and sense of humor, you tube my favorite song of his, "a dying cub fan's last request".

The Grateful Dead - The Grateful Dead
either you love them, or you're not familiar with their work. if you smoke a joint, then listen to "american beauty", and don't like them, well, we can still be friends. just not good friends.
favorite song.. "ripple", also love "

Billy Joel Greatest Hits: Vol. 1-2 (2CD) - Billy Joel
the piano man has written and performed so many great songs, it's hard to know where to start. he hit my radar in 1976, with his turnstiles album, which includes 2 of my favorite songs of his, "miami 2017", and "new york state of mind". we're both from long island, but that's where the similarities end..
The Best of Little Feat - Little Feat
you can't discuss little feat without starting with the late, great lowell george. he was an excellent slide guitarist, singer, and song writer.their music was a blend of rock, blues, country, and jazz. their '78 collection, "waiting for columbus", is one of the best live albums you'll ever hear.
my favorite song of theirs is "dixie chicken", followed by "willin", "oh atlanta", and "there's a fat man in the bathtub".
