MGM's financial instability continued into the new millennium. No longer able to produce or even market most of their own films, nearly every MGM release throughout the decade was a co-production with one or two (or usually up to several) independent companies. While the film output during the first half of the 2000's was very small, MGM would receive a major increase in product as the decade progressed due to its distribution deal with the newly formed The Weinstein Company, the Weinstein brothers' follow up independent company to their own Miramax Films. The MGM/Weinstein deal produced some successful films but unfortunately, far too many more flops. Any hope that actor Tom Cruise would revitalize United Artists (and by extension, MGM) when he and production partner Paula Wagner took over that company quickly dissolved when their MGM/UA co-production projects underperformed at the box office. Without any blockbuster franchises or recognizable licenses to fall back on (aside from James Bond, The Pink Panther and Rocky, all of which they inherited from UA), MGM had sunk into a financial hole of several billion dollars in debt and filing for bankruptcy seemed inevitable. After managing to hold on to more downs than ups in their studio stock for nearly 50 years, MGM finally had to admit defeat and surrender all their upcoming films to other companies...and these were just the ones that still got released. Several others saw their theatrical releases get cancelled entirely.
The films that trace the evolution of the MGM story as it entered the new millennium are all collected here. By the end of the decade, Kirk Kerkorian's real plans for MGM had come to fruition. While it was failing big time as a movie studio, branching the name out into hotel and casino properties paid off immensely. Especially with younger audiences, the name 'MGM' just may be far more synonymous with Las Vegas than it is with Hollywood.
