The Driver and the Mechanic are drag racers pitting their gray '55 Chevy against any and all gearheads in order to make money for gas and food. They and a tag-along Girl meet their match in GTO and they all set off on a cross-country race to Washington D.C., with the winner getting the loser's car.
But it isn't the end that really counts; it is the process of getting there, as the Girl's fickleness forces the Driver to decide what matters more: endless races or her.

But will their vacation be all it was cracked up to be? Especially as Audrey takes up pot smoking, Rusty reads porno magazines and annoying Cousin Eddie sends spiteful Aunt Edna to join them on their trip.
The Griswolds then get stuck in a ghetto, Aunt Edna dies, Clark drives off the road, hillbillies take all their money and Clark is shot at in a Dodge City bar.
