Well, who hasn't heard of this great movie. Nuff said.

My Dog Skip (2000)
If you have children, you have to watch this movie as well as have them watch it. A beautiful movie about what a pet dog can mean to a little boy or girl for that matter. The meaningful relationship they establish and how the dog helps the boy grow. Very touching and I would suspect very meaningful to a lot of us.

If you love Westerns you must watch this one. The stylized violence first depicted by Sam Peckinpah in this movie was so original and raw that it caused an uproar of enormous proportion when it was released. A little tame by today's standards but we're talking about 1969 with blood spurting out of wounds.
The other important element was that it happened to characters that had been well developed and that you felt emotionally connected to so that it made the violence even more real. It was happening to people you cared about.

This movie takes a look at what life would have been like if George Bailey, (James Stewart's) character had not been born. The set-up is that in the real life George has made a mess of his real life as well as the people in the small town, where everyone knows each other. In desperation one night after he's had a lot to drink he wishes he had never been born.
Well he gets the opportunity to experience from a distance with the guidance of an angel what town life would have been like without him. Who his wife would have married instead? Etc. etc.
At one time or another I know I have thought similar thoughts and maybe some of you have also.
I try to watch this movie every Christmas as a bit of a booster for me that sometimes no matter how tough things can get, it could be worse. Maybe the fact that I like Jimmy Stewart in any movie helps for me but give it a try if you haven't already, you won't regret it even though it's a bit dated.

Ed Bloom Senior (Albert Finney)is on his dying bed in his last few days and his son comes back to be with him for his final journey. They haven't gotten along for a long time and he (Billy Crudup) seeks to understand his father's life choices through the final stories Ed Senior tells him on his death bed.
It's a simple story that will not fail to touch the hearts of most you that will watch it.
Choices: Do we do what we want or what we must? Do we satisfy our sense of adventure or do we crush it because it doesn't fullfill someone else's needs? Do we sit and explain all our actions to our loved ones or do we hope that their love for us will help them understand?
For the men out there, growing up did you get along with your dad? I sure know I didn't. We were never on the same page. Magically as I got older the book seemed to change and in my mid twenties I started to undertand my dad and why he did the things he did.
The movie did touch me emotionly as my own dad is now dying and I wish I had taken the time to know him better and wish we hadn't had so many disagreements.
"Big Fish" sums up a lot of father-son relationships and it's worth seeing if you haven't already done so.

Man on Fire (2004)
Rayburn: Mariana!... Obey me, and I will love you.
Creasy: So that's how it works huh?
Rayburn: That's how it works.
[Mariana brings Rayburn his drink]
Creasy: Does she have a sister?
Denzel Washington plays Creasey,a former assassin hired to protect a family, in a Mexico rocked abductions for ransoms.

2nd quote
Rayburn: A man can be an artist... in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good he is at it. Creasey's art is death. He's about to paint his masterpiece.

If you are only going to watch a handful of foreign movies this needs to be one of them. It is a great love story wrapped around a murder mystery which takes many delightful twists and turns.
Ricardo Darin does a great job as the lead actor and the direction is one of Academy Award caliber if they had oscars in Argentina by Juan Jose Campanella.
Find it and watch it, you'll thank me.

Gladiator (2000)
Maximus: You don't find it hard to do your duty?
Cicero: Sometimes I do what I want to do. The rest of the time I do what I have to do.

Doesn't that say a lot about what we all do in our lives.

I've taken a crack at list of my personal favorite movies. I know there's a lot of other movies that can be added based on personal tastes. If you look at my list and you think of your own tastes and it's a heck yeah then you know what to do.
Rather than strict reviews I've included some memorable quotes from some of these movies.
Example Quotes:
Big Fish:
Senior Ed Bloom: There's a time when a man needs to fight , and a time when he needs to accept his destiny is lost...the ship has sailed and only a fool would continue. Truth is ...I've always been a fool.
