A dog and an owl have been having a hoot after forming an unlikely friendship and a bizarre but special bond.

Napoleon the owl was so tiny that breeders almost threw his egg away before he was born. But he survived and was rescued by animal photographer Tanja Brandt, who lives in Germany. She introduced Napoleon to her Belgian Shepherd dog Ingo.

"Ingo is not always the calmest dog, however when he is around the birds, and particularly Napoleon, he is very soft and gentle. He seems very at peace with them," she said.

Brandt has captured the unusual pair’s friendship over the past few years, including staged pictures of them doing the laundry, relaxing by the lake and resting by candlelight.

Napoleon is just under a year old and Ingo is two and a half.
