The Double Life of Véronique (1991)
A woman catches the image of her doppleganger passing her by, thus solidifying her death. A movie about that terrifying feeling - to know you're not alone.

Morvern Callar (2002)
My favorite movie of all time (currently). A woman who tries to live in the present moment, via her senses - a woman trying to be free. Impossible.
sellis's rating:

Tarkovsky's last. They had to burn down a house, but the shot didn't come out right. So they rebuilt it and BURNT IT DOWN AGAIN. The master.
sellis's rating:

Persona (1966)
The only Bergman I really love also happens to be one of the greatest. Most unforgettable, beautiful opening two minutes. About the merging of two identities into one. Tragic.
sellis's rating:

When we watch the first five-minute-long shot/scene, you'll just know.
sellis's rating:

Tarkovsky's response to 2001. His statement - why look outward for answers when there's still so much about ourselves we cannot understand? Plus, an anti-gravity scene.
sellis's rating:

Chungking Express (1994)
Was my favorite movie for like 5 years. Still up there. Expired pineapples as a metaphor for expiring love. Promising yourself that you'll fall in love with the next woman who walks through the door. The most lovely movie-poem about love.
sellis's rating:

Three Colours: Red (1994) (1994)
This guy Kieslowski. You'd dig him. The space between us, the missed connections, knowing strangers you'll never meet.
sellis's rating:

Solaris (2002)
Soderbergh wrote/directed/edited this. And it's just pure orgasm. A remake of Tarkovsky that (don't tell anyone) just might be better than Tarkovsky's.
sellis's rating:

La Notte (1961)
Antonioni. The ultimate tale of the death of love. Greatest ending ever? Undoubtedly.
sellis's rating:

That title. Newsreel footage. No surprises. How the hell is this making you feel? You can't look away.
sellis's rating:

Beginners (2010)
Proof that we are on the right track in our lives. As creative people, as good people. There is hope.
sellis's rating:

To the Wonder (2013)
Malick has something to say about love. And he doesn't need words.
sellis's rating:

Long static wide shots. Hilarious, dry, desperation. Falling in love with ideas you create of people you've met only once. I have a feeling you'll enjoy this director. He made that crazy watermelon sex movie you may have heard about.
sellis's rating:

Wings of Desire (1988)
America remade this into City of Angels with Nicolas Cage. Wim Wenders (guy who directed Pina) made it into greatness long before that.
sellis's rating:

Last Year at Marienbad (1961)
The movie, described within the movie, as a game the audience must agree to play with the filmmaker that there is no way to win.
sellis's rating:

"No matter how many books you read, there are some things you'll never, ever, ever, ever fucking understand." Second favorite movie of all time.
sellis's rating:

Procedural, cryptic, low-budget examination of time travel logic. Amazing.
sellis's rating:

Mauvais Sang (1986)
Modern Love by David Bowie. Run, Alex. Run. Because there's nothing you can do or say that will make her love you.
sellis's rating:

Nicolas Roeg was a filmmaker whose movies ALWAYS had the greatest editing. Always.
