Director: Stanley Kramer
His 1st Movie
My 7th movie watched from the director.

Mitchum and De Havilland are really good in this debut film from Stanley Kramer. Sinatra plays the rare supporting role well, but the lesser known Gloria Grahame is the one who steals the show.

It's clear Kramer didn't have the directorial acumen he would later have on display, but it's a solid debut for its time. It gets a little melodramatic and the themes are now dated. I found the long surgery scene to be an unusual way to present a climax in a 1950s movie - which means I liked it!

Director: John Ford
His 63rd movie
My 14th movie watched from the director

One of those 50s comedies that must have been dated pretty quickly. It's light comedy about war, strange, and stranger yet with the ending that is trying to be emotional. The acting saves it and it moves along nicely.

East of Eden (1955)

Director: Elia Kazan
His 11th Movie.
My 7th movie watched from the director.

This is an excellent example of the "dangerous" new era in acting meeting the safe ways of Hollywood. Kazan did it with a number of actors, most famously with Brando. In this, Dean's acting may seem over the top for today's standards but it was goddam revolutionary for the time and it's entirely understandable why he was seen as the next big thing.

The movie itself, while expertly crafted, isn't all that interesting or notable. It mostly relies on the beyond-his-years method acting from dean and very fine performances from a cast of relatively unknowns.

Marty (1955)

Borgnine nails his role as a hapless romantic in this dialogue-heavy classic.

Grace Kelly has never looked lovelier and at home in this role; and this is a perfect role for Cary Grant.

Hitchcock does it again!
