Drive (2011)
From the incredible action scenes, to the perfect soundtrack, to the free form structure, to the references to a dozen other genres, to the spot on performances, this film was the biggest treat of the year.

The Raid: Redemption (2011)
This was the best action movie to come out in years. Hollywood will soon screw this up by casting a Twilight alumni remake, and filling it with a bunch of CGI nonsense.
Film Ninja's rating:

As expected, this Dardenne film is fascinating and refreshing. The Dardennes are easily among the world's greatest filmmakers at this point.
Film Ninja's rating:

Attack the Block (2011)
This really got me over the pain of watching the child actors of Super 8 talk and talk. Sorry kids, but I don't care about your lives as amateur filmmakers, I just wanna see you fight for your lives with those aliens! That's all that Attack the Block cares about as well.
Film Ninja's rating:

Headhunters (2011)
Super secret art thief decides to steal a painting from a Jason Bourne level special forces psychopath. To put it mildly, bloodshed and intrigue ensue!
Film Ninja's rating:

Source Code (2011)
This latest take on "La Jetee" finally won me over to the dark side of time travel. To me, Duncan Jones has already become a more accessible Terry Gilliam, and I mean that as a compliment. I can't wait to see what he does with a few more films under his belt.
Film Ninja's rating:

The Artist (2011)
Oddly enough this silent romantic comedy won the Best Picture of 2011, going up against a century worth of innovations, like sound, widescreen, color, CGI and even 3D! As usual, it is the French that have to remind Hollywood of its former cinematic greatness, and the Academy simply ate it up. My fascination with The Artist wasn't the nostalgia as much as the successful combination of modern filmmaking techniques mixed with the old school look to the film.
Film Ninja's rating:

The Guard (2011)
This film had a very good "thriller" pace. As the tension began to rise, and new dangers were introduced, I became aware that the excellent cast had made me care about the fate of their characters. Because of this quality, The Guard manages to transcend the buddy-cop movie genre.
Film Ninja's rating:

A stupid, ridiculous, violent, meaningless waste of time. Indeed, those are the elements that make up a great zombie movie - which is why this ranks among the greatest of them all.
Film Ninja's rating:

Miss Bala (2011)
A hot beauty queen catches the eye of a Mexican cartel boss, and as a result we get a snapshot of that world from her naive point of view. In its neo-realist way, the film doesn't really glorify, nor condemn anybody in this contemporary situation.
Film Ninja's rating:

Red Dog (2011)
The legendary Red Dog. If there was ever a greater hero than Red Dog, I have never heard of him.
Film Ninja's rating:

Fincher delivered a more stylish version of the Swedish thriller, but didn't compromise on the violence to appeal to the masses. Bravo.
Film Ninja's rating:

Goon (2012)
The typical sports movie formula has become so predictable that it's refreshing to see a film like Goon just rip apart the genre. Thankfully the film is crude and violent, which accurately portrays the sport of Hockey as it really was, not too many years ago.
Film Ninja's rating:

Hugo (2011)
Scorsese's film took me back to a time when the motion picture was an amazing new art form. Much like The Artist, I found it fascinating to see the techniques of filmmaking in those early days.
Film Ninja's rating:

Utterly ridiculous and over the top. If you can make it through the countless battle scenes of this WWII epic you will feel shell shocked and exhausted. Basically its like watching the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan for 2 hours.
Film Ninja's rating:

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.
I have included a small explanation for people who may not have heard of the film.
Lists will constantly change as I see more films.
