Herzog finally found a place full of the eccentric characters that he loves to study in his films. The depressed penguin, the psychedelic seal songs, the volcano, and so many other memorable scenes make this a must-see.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

Is it a dark fairy tale with a historical backdrop? Or is it a war movie shown from the perspective of an overly imaginative child? Either way, the film is dark and disturbing, but there is always a hint of the possibility of better days to come.

Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

As a political comedy, the film is offbeat and sporadically funny. Personally, I firmly believe - though without any inside knowledge - that this film is more realistic than a documentary in depicting Washington politics, which raises it to a masterpiece status for me.

Persepolis (2007)

In a year that produced so many amazing documentaries, this one was still able to be memorable. The animated recent history of Iran - especially from a female point of view - is endlessly fascinating for someone who has no knowledge about these events, like myself.

The Shock Doctrine [Short]

After seeing this film I've continued to marvel at how stupid citizens have simply handed all their rights and freedoms away, all in the name of some vague concept like "security". This short documentary shows you how this brainwashing was accomplished.

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.

I have included a small explanation for people who may not have heard of the film.
