The Proposition (2005)

This Aussie Western is gritty and violent to the extreme, but it still has amazing beauty, and a relaxing pace.

Perhaps the most surreal of the vengeance trilogy, this film also has the most straightforward plot. Visually unforgettable - especially the "fade-to-white" version.

Grizzly Man (2005)

The Grizzly Man himself filmed most of the dramatic bear footage, but Herzog filled in the "found footage" gaps by interviewing friends and acquaintances of the Grizzly Man, to give the viewer multiple viewpoints on the subject matter. This results in a masterful documentary.

A History of Violence (2005)

After a few viewings this character study has become better and better. There is a lot of insight into hiding from the past, and how people can or can't change over time. On top of that, it is also an intense thriller.

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.
