Herman J. Mankiewicz was an American screenwriter who, with Orson Welles, wrote the screenplay for "Citizen Kane" (1941), for which they won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Earlier, Mankiewicz was a Berlin correspondent for Womenโs Wear Daily, assistant theater editor at The New York Times and the first regular drama critic at The New Yorker. He joined the United States Army Air Service to fly planes during World War I but due to airsickness, enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving in the American Expeditionary Forces. His life was dramatized in the 2020 Oscar-winning film "Mank".
