F.W. Murnau was one of the most influential German film directors of the silent era. A figure in the expressionist movement in German cinema during the 1920s, some of Murnau's films from the silent era have been lost, but most still survive. Murnau also served as an infantry company commander and communications officer in the German Imperial Army during the First World War. He later served as a radio operator and bomber pilot with the German Flying Corps (the Luftstreitkräfte), flying missions in northern France. After an emergency landing in Switzerland, he was interned as a POW until the end of the war.
