The role-playing game know as The World is infested with PKs: Player Killers who needlessly slay their cyber-opponents. Haseo learns about PKs the hard way during his first game. He's revived by Ovan, the leader of the largely defunct Twilight Brigade that searches for the mysteriousKey of the Twilight--which Tsukasa pursued in Sign. The Brigade still has a few members: elegant, intuitive Shino; obnoxiously upbeat newcomer Tabby; and long-suffering Sakisaka. Pitted against them are the sinister members of the TaN guild. The rival guilds pursue Haseo, who possesses a mysterious talent that will affect the fate of The World. Koichi Mashimo directs with his familiar, assured skill, and the special effects are impressive. .hack//Roots will please fans of the earlier series and introduce newcomers to the attractions and dangers of The World.
