William Peter Blatty was an American writer, director and producer best known for his 1971 novel "The Exorcist" and for the highly successful 1973 film adaptation, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and was also nominated for Best Picture as the film's producer. He also wrote and directed the sequel "The Exorcist III". Blatty also served as an officer in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and later worked as an editor for the United States Information Agency in Beirut, Lebanon.
