Shonen Knife is a Japanese pop-punk band that formed in 1981. They were also one of Kurt Cobain's favorite acts.
Kurt caught Shonen Knife performing in LA in 1991, then invited them to open for Nirvana during a UK tour that year. They played with Nirvana again in 1993, performing 6 shows across the US.
“I didn’t know who Nirvana were before that, but they looked wild, and I was so scared, so I didn’t want to tour with them at first,” Shonen Knife frontwoman Naoko Yamano told The Guardian later on. “But by the end of the tour we became friends."
